Title: Sonic Gems Collection Rant
Post by: Mystical Ninja on Oct 29 2005, 02:40 PM
One way or another, Sonic Team has ALWAYS managed to disappoint their fans with all these Sonic collection games after Sonic Jam for the Saturn. There was Sonic Mega Collection for the Gamecube, in which they promised that Sonic CD would be part of the collection, along with Sonic R, and a few other games. And then in the end, they scrap it, and come up with some BS excuse like "It was removed, due to lack of space", or "We couldn't properly emulate the Sega CD", and other crap like that, when I know for a FACT that they could've done it, they just didn't WANT to. Then, there was Sonic Mega Collection Plus, which they added some stuff that the other one didn't have, but they STILL don't give people what they really want, such as Sonic CD or Knuckles' Chaotix.

And now, there's Gems Collection, where they finally DID put Sonic CD on it, along with Sonic the Fighters and some others. Personally, this game was more of a disappointment than the others for a number of reasons. Number one, they only decided to release this game for the Gamecube in the U.S., and it was a watered down version of the Japanese version. I'm talking about the fact that they cut Streets of Rage 1-3 from the U.S. version, and kept it in the Japanese version for the Playstation 2. They made up ANOTHER BS excuse, and this time having to do with game ratings. They talk about how Streets of Rage is a "mature" game, when it was just your average fighting/beat 'em-up game with absolutely NO blood, or ANY mature content whatsoever. Then, they decided to "replace" it with Vectorman 1 and 2 (which are good games, by the way). And then, I find out that Japan gets both Steets of Rage AND Vectorman, which leaves the U.S. with less games.

Another thing I hate about it is how games like Knuckles' Chaotix and SegaSonic Arcade were promised to be in this collection, and then they cut them. And even when the game was cut, they decided to have a bunch of Chaotix artwork in there, despite it not actually being INCLUDED in the game. Things like that are nothing but a slap in the face to Chaotix fans, and just people in the U.S., period.

The JPN Sonic Gems Collection had the Genesis version (???) of Bonanza Bros in it as well. Why that was cut out from the US release is beyond me. Instead of just leaving empty space from where the additional games were cutted off from, they should've replaced them with other classic Sega titles. The US version is about 4 games short of what the JPN version have.

As for the absence of Chaotix and SegaSonic Arcade, I stick with the theory that Mighty's creator has left Sega, and that the rights were taken with him.

Ahh, but that's just it: the whole "Mighty's creator" thing is just a rumor, and besides him not appearing in Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic X, there's no real evidence of that. I doubt this claim, mostly because of the fact that they still show references to Mighty in Sonic Mega Collection and SMC+(Archie Comic scans), and in the Chaotix artwork of Gems Collection. If that whole thing was REALLY true, then they wouldn't be allowed to show any evidence that he ever existed.

So Sega still shows Mighty material after his creator left the company...so there is hope that the rumor is untrue.

Anyways, here is a list of Sonic games not yet in a compilation title:
Sonic Eraser-SG (sega meganet download)
Knuckles' Chaotix-32X
SegaSonic Arcade-AC
Sonic Gameworld-PICO
Tails and the Music Maker-PICO
Sonic 3D Blast-SS
Sonic Chaos-SMS
Sonic The Hedgehog-SMS
Sonic Spinball-SMS
Sonic The Hedgehog 2-SMS

Although I doubt that the PICO games will make it in future compilations, as they are little children's games and that mostly teenagers play GCNs and PS2s and god knows how they're gonna emulate the controls of the system with a GCN or PS2 controller, and that the SMS games were vastly ignored in favor of their Game Gear counterparts, yet the SMS games are better on a TV screen than their GG counterparts. And Sonic 3D Blast for SS is superior to it's SG counterpart in graphics and sound, and Sonic Eraser, a decent puzzle game, would be a plesent suprise giving that Sega MegaNet doesn't exist anymore and that it was a Japan-only service.

Most of those games suck or the GG versions cover them fine. SOnic Chaos, STH, SS, and STH2 are all in SADX. The SMS ones aren't that much different from the GG ones to my knowledge so there's no point. Sonic 3D Blast-SS is a let down. I kinda liked it better than the crap Genesis version. I don't know what the heck Sonic Eraser is but it prolly sucks. And that Tails thing? ... ROFFLE. Not having that is an improvement. The Knuckles' Chaotix is the only real let-down from this. And i guess SSArcade is sorta, but eh. It prolly has something to do with that Mighty rights rumor ya'll keep speaking of. But... maybe not. Oh well.

Well, the whole "Mighty's creator" theory turned out to be true afterall. Some member of a Chaotix board that I go to E-mailed Sega about it, and then they said Mighty won't be in any more games, because of copyright issues. Sheesh, that really sucks. Mighty was my favorite character in Chaotix, next to Knuckles himself. I guess the Chaotix will never be the same again.

EDIT: Disregard that part, I'm 100% convinced that it's not true, now. It's mainly because they're usually given some contract, stating that whatever they create at Sega, stays at Sega. Not to mention the fact that Mighty's artwork was shown in Gems Collection, and that's already proof enough as it is.

Anyways, back to Sonic Gems Collection. According to Yuji Naka, SegaSonic Arcade wasn't added to the collection, because it was "hard to emulate". And yet again, I think he's lying about that. They said the same thing about Sonic CD, and then they ended up pulling that off, so why can't they do the same thing with SegaSonic? If there are people out there who know how to program arcade emulators BY THEMSELVES (that have SegaSonic support), then I'm sure that a WHOLE FREAKIN' TEAM could've pulled that off.

Hi kids,

Yes, both mega collections had PLENTY of space on them for SonicCD

Sega didn't choose not to add it, they just couldn't write an emulator for it.

THE ZAPPIX RESTS!

Not true, they're PERFECTLY capable of creating emulators for Sonic CD, Knuckles' Chaotix, and SegaSonic. They're just too lazy to do it. It's either that, or they just decided to leave some games out, and add them to the NEXT Sonic Collection game, in a cheap attempt to get more money. I mean, really, when you think about it, Sonic Mega Collection Plus and Sonic Gems Collection wouldn't even exist if they actually added everything to the first collection.
