My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
« on: Feb 24 2012, 01:11 AM »
Am I the only one on this planet who'd never be caught dead watching this crap? I honestly do not understand this show's appeal. How is it that some show that was initially aimed at kindergarten girls managed to garner so much hype, even to the point where grown men watch it? It makes absolutely no sense to me. I mean, really, this wouldn't even concern me so much if I didn't see something pony-related nearly everywhere I go on the internet. For the most part, it's literally inescapable. Almost every time I go to DeviantART's main page, I see something related to it. I even sometimes see it in my inbox from a select few people that I've added to my watchlist. Not only that, but I see something pony-related at nearly every other site I go to, as well. Seriously, it's almost enough to drive me insane.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not attacking anybody for liking the show. Again, I'm just simply saying that I don't understand its appeal, and that I, myself, would never be caught dead watching it under any circumstances. That is, unless I was being paid good money or if someone had a gun to my head, but I can't see either of those happening, so it's completely out of the question for me. Each time I see something pony-related in any way, shape, or form, regardless of what it is, I cringe, and die a little on the inside. I just cannot stomach that garbage at all, and I'd literally hurl if I were to ever try watching it myself. Plus, my pride just won't allow it.

it has internet and pop culture refs, or so i've heard, there's one reason how it might've went memetic and grew into a infernal girly equine cancer choking up search results

wouldn't touch the show with a thousand lightyear pole myself

I'm afraid, the best way of understanding the appeal is to watch the cartoon. They're up on Youtube. Give the first one a go and see what happens.

If you like them, welcome.

If you didn't, then all right. You have a greater understanding of what's happening and a reasonable excuse not to watch it ever again.

Still waiting on a bubble-bath...

I've seen a few episodes, it's alright.  Most of my D&D group watches, I guess a couple of them would qualify as bronies.

One of them fangasms over just about every new episode, I don't quite understand why.  He doesn't get that way over similar things that aren't pony-related.

So, the subject of My Little Pony was brought up at another forum, and from there, I told everyone that I thought it was garbage. Can you guess what happened next? I get chewed out for it by a select few people. Not only that, but one of them in particular went ballistic over my opinion, even though I made it plainly clear that I was in no way trying to belittle or make myself seem better than anyone who likes that show. Not only that, but I ended up being accused of being sexist and bigoted in the process. I mean, really? Really? Are you kidding me? I don't discriminate against women; I'm all for them having equal rights, and I don't consider either gender to be any better than the other. Not to mention the fact that I have tons of female fancharacters, along with the fact that I almost always prefer female protagonists over the male ones. I'm one of the last people who should ever be considered sexist, "bigoted", or "prejudiced" in any way whatsoever.

Do you know what this tells me? This just goes to show that you cannot say anything, anything about the show that isn't "OMG, AWSUM!!!111ONEONE!!! BRONY4LIFE!!11ONEONE! *Insert other pony talk BS here*" without somebody making an issue out of it. If you even dare to say anything about My Little Pony that's even the slightest bit negative, you pretty much become public enemy number one. Well, excuse the hell out of me for not being a grown man who obsesses over a cartoon that was clearly designed for little girls. Now, don't get me wrong... I'm not saying that everyone in the fandom is like this; only some of the ones I've come across. I've seen some sane pony fans, but unfortunately, there are so few of them in number.

Ever since all that drama started nearly a week ago, I've been having an internal struggle regarding whether or not I should give the show a chance, and I did just that by watching the first episode yesterday. I'll tell you... Just simply typing that into the search engine alone was enough to make me want to puke. To add insult to injury, the theme song was even more cringe-worthy. Admittedly, the show wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be, but at the same time, I still don't like it. It's way too kiddy/girly for my taste, and I'm saying this as someone who's watched The Powerpuff Girls in the past, and enjoys Sailor Moon. My Little Pony, on the other hand, is where I draw the line. Again, it wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be, but I still have no desire whatsoever to watch another episode. It's just not for me.

I like the show, and find it enjoyable. I even have a couple favorite characters. That's about as far as I'd go. I don't fangasm over every new episode or get upset over missing one. Hell, I've missed over a season and a half.

Wow, just as I thought of making a rant topic about it, I found it was already a subject. Thanks, Ninja :3

Speaking of the subject now. Were they the ponies? OH YES! My summary.

This comes from a guy whose sister used to bring up pony episodes on YT, while I lied dormant in my two storey bed, taking the higher storey. In front of my lovely 1360x768 monitor, lied that two storey bed. So to speak, because I had nothing to do, and because that's my behaviour usually with YT and other videos overall, and not with a certain toon of all toons, I think I watched "A Canterlot Wedding" and "Equestria Girls". Now, these are two specials. OK. Now, how different are they than most Barbie plots I saw with my sis as well? Yet it seems like the ponies get all the love for some reason.

Very well. Its the viral insanity the internet deals with the ponies that makes me insane.

Every unrelated Doctor Who thread every fortnight, has to have ponies. Every time I open up deviantART, I see a pony whether on my main page or on my friends watch (I unwatch non-friends this way). Every single website has to have the image of a pony. Goddamit why ponies of all characters. And there was the geek week done involving them on YT.

Fine enough, so I decided to complain about how its infesting the internet everywhere like a zombie disease or something like that, and how the community helps me hate it even more. Only thing the community did is basically complain about me complaining.

Worst offender is that Doctor Who thread on SEGA Forums. So now we should put ponies on even threads to unrelated shows? Dammit. I complain again about how its infecting that too, only for them to complain about me even more with their flawed vision. In the end, I got the 24 hour suspension.

Well, there's a much bigger offender. One of my former friends on TTFF, yes, unfriended me cause I didn't listen to one of his flawed technological advice, and also because I kept complaining about darn ponies and iOS. But wait, he always mocked Samsung.

There's another situation where even freaking Valve added a TF2 hat listed as an MLP hat on the author's tumblr. I could not take this move and complained yet again, about how MLP is infestive and even TF2 is falling to it. I met the trolls on the way, the "who cares its a hat" trolls, and also the "grow up and breathe some fresh air" trolls. Little did I meet sane bronies on the way. LITTLE.

Then they come and say "Hey! What you met was the minority! Don't blame the majority for what the minority does!" Very well. If its a minority, then why is it too easy to find, just by well, it finding you? Why can't the good majority you speak of find me by itself? The sane guys are the minority, the trolls are the majority.

I was just almost nearly becoming a closet brony, with no intentions of watching anything in anything, just to keep my chest off of it. Then more immature encounters ended me up being an anti-brony. I could stare at the show while eating breakfast just like I did with any other show that aired during breakfast, as a show for little girls, until the internet asked me to do what was needed to be done.

Using extensions, I blocked pony related keywords on Chrome and Firefox, and will be happy to have a YT keyword hider if I even can find one, and the Equestria Girls file I have on my computer, which I caught myself by the way, had now became write only (will grant you an error if you try to view it.) That because of these above situations, and more encounters that I could list later. Not just that, but I freaking close whatever thing that has a pony the instant it comes up. I would run outside the room if there's too much to close. I simply can't handle it. I still can't forget it either, even by watching anime, a kind of media I once hated (now I only hate Naruto and Conan, and sports anime).

All that writing was simply on the subject of MLP. But I doubt the internet will change anything for me. It will simply shove more ponies on us until it makes me thrive to look for that one forum that is MLP-free.

OOOOOH! This needs attention. It was posted on a Steam thread against that MLP hat. Its now deleted sadly.

Before that I have seen many brony arguments and demands for power over other media but when they are accused of such thing "They are all trolls" or "my fanbase is full of A-holes". I took it.

When I took my sister there, there were no females. Only male teens, or men around 20-30, wearing hoodies with ponies faces on them and fabric wings or horns stuck onto them. A few were holding signs with the MLP FiM title written on it. They were crowded around a stand shouting pony names at the actors setting it up. When I tried to take my sister for a closer look some started swearing at her calling her a "Baby B**ch" and claiming she was the reason bronies looked bad. Many around them cried "its too manly for little girls" and pleeded her to "gtfo". My sister being on the autistic spectrum did not understand what they meant but I knew something was completely wrong. More and more gathered infront of her, a few threw scrunched paper, the rest just watched. After about a minute one jabbed a sign at her forehead and she started crying for my mother. They laughed at her. I felt an extreme hatred for bronies in my mind and picked up my little sister and fled.

LOOK WHAT THE BRONIES HAVE DONE!

See, they found a website about anti-bronies. Soon enough they started posting pony porn in there. This led to the site being shut down due to the "13000" visitors it got, but then it was immediately held by them, so they made it a complete makeover. Now its a site for pony porn, dammit.

They claimed the people on that website to be autistic and heck, but I'm pretty sure they're the lifeless, autistic ones there...

I'm a little late on this, but I did read both posts on the days they were posted, and I just didn't get around to saying anything up until now, because I wasn't sure I had much else to contribute to this topic. Both situations you've described in your post, Pooka, along with this piece of work, are prime examples of everything that's wrong with the pony fandom. I swear, the more antics I see out of these rabid bronies, the more I begin to lose faith in humanity.

Shit like this is why I don't associate myself with the brony community. The bad eggs ruining it for the whole bunch. I don't even obsess over the show, or have it programmed into my DVR (hell, I don't think I even get the channel). I enjoy the show, I like the characters, and I like the art style. That's about as far as I go.

There are bad eggs in /every/ fandom.

Indeed, yet they take all the attention for themselves. I'd rather these bronies tried Sonic instead and stopped looking back. At least don't lose faith early on, Ninja, they might disband later.

Samui, yes, every fandom has bad eggs... but the bronies took a little girl's show too far apparently. TOO FAR. Heck, Sonic was supposed to have the worst fandom as most say until the bronies took it.

OK, I'm a Sonic fan who likes everything Sonic! Those things he doesn't like he doesn't hate it. Unlike the bronies who hate gens 1, 2 and 3.
