- hanamogura : bayleef was completely different
- meganium was named "hanaryu" or "blossom dragon"
- "kurusu" and "honoguma" were a thing, they were the water and fire starters; out of this original 3, only the meganium line survived apart from meganium's mid-evo being changed; the kurusu line may have resurfaced as a combination of the oshawott and popplio lines
- noctowl was different
- mikon, vulpix prevo
- mareep had a different name, "pachimee"
- monja and jaranra, a scrapped tangela prevo and a proto tangrowth
- haneei bird that is half black/white
- qwilfish almost had an evolution! seems it was recycled and modified into whiscash for gen III
- proto pichu, cleffa, and igglybuff; pichu was completely different, cleffa had an antenna, igglybuff had no hair tufts and had smaller eyes
- quagsire was a standalone, was named "mizuo"
- gyopin, goldeen prevo
- marill did not have an evolution
- manbo1, ikari, grotes ; fish, anchor eel, and an angler-eel line, supposedly the first 2 became carvanha/sharpedo, the 3rd was split into lanturn and huntail
- para, paras prevo
- crobat was once named "exsing/X-ing"
- ariados was different, was named "twohead"
- skarmory was once named "yoroidori"
- what the hell is that thing after skarmory? some freaky goomy prototype? surprisingly a ditto evo, "animon"
- a baby 3-headed bird? doduo prevo apparently
- sunflora was standalone
- slightly different phanpy...it was named "paon" after the sound of a trumpeting elephant
- twins : this...two-headed ghost thing...was what girafarig would've evolved from
- proto girafarig, was dark/normal
- konya, meowth prevo
- rinrin and bellurun, a black cat line, beta purrloin/liepard?
- proto politoed, eerily similar to the famed fakemon tentaquil
- mitsuboshi : thought to be a proto ledian

- umbreon was once the poison type eeveelution; its toxic sweat claimed in dex entries was a holdover from then
- turban : seems the form shellder took when it became part of slowbro/slowking was almost considered as its own pokemon
- betbaby : prevo grimer
- remoraid and octillery were different, more resembling a gun/tank than their final designs
- gongu : tyrogue was less humanoid

- pudi : growlithe prevo
- jumpluff line was different and based on cats, their final versions removed the cat motif from their names and design
- barririna : proto mime jr
- lip : smoochum looked more like a mini jynx
- elebaby : proto elekid was more simplistic

- bellossom was sparkly with additional detail in flowers
- tsubomitto : scrapped split weepinbell evo; seems oddish and bellsprout were recognized as counterparts by game freak at one point
- bomseaker : a seal with a fireball, would have been the first fire/water type
- proto delibird : had a more obvious santa claus motif, was named "gift"
- kotora/raitora : electric hamster/tiger line
- madame : the name doesn't seem to match the motif of farfetch'd (kamonegi), but is this the fabled farfetch'd evo we never got? gamefreak you bastards (and to make things worse, this was speculated to have been adapted into lugia)
- norowara : voodoo doll
- kyonpan : panda kyonshi
- murkrow had a pointy hat design
- prototype blissey, was named "happy", had 2 egg pouches and grew a heart on its head
- scizor was much spikier, was names "scissors"
- plux : scrapped pinsir evo that was split into 2 designs - heracross, and later mega pinsir
- houndour was called "devil"
- wolfman, warwolf : these...beast fur wearing things
- this lion thing...is a proto porygon2, supposedly a precursor of pon de lion from the mr. donut ads that would happen a few years later...pon de lion's creator was a former gamefreak employee
- nameeru : proto lickilicky
- proto kingdra
- rai, en, sui ; in case their early names don't make it obvious, these are the proto L-beasts, and they look like the fakemon of some furry deviantartist, and more canine than their finalized designs..."legendary dogs" actually made sense at one point in time
- proto sneasel, was much cuter
- ho-oh had a different front sprite, but the back sprite stayed the same
- togepi, snubbull, proto aipom looked to be recent additions at the time of the demo's build; aipom was once called "tail"
- this looked like either proto celebi or proto leafeon...but its name, リーフィ (leafie), which matches the name scheme of eiefi (espeon) suggests it was going to be leafeon
- ho-oh is in the title screen of both G/S protos, suggesting lugia wasn't yet a concept until later
- all pokemon between 152 - 251 have a placeholder or glitch cry
- unown's sprite is broken in-game in the pokemon viewer in debug mode
- a "missingno" called "neeno*ba", no.253, can be brought out in test fight wild debug battles; it has the backsprite of the enemy pokemon, but crashes the game as soon as it is sent out
- another "missingno" called "binidenu", no.252 can only be fought as an opponent in the test fight wild debug battle
- the steel type was called "metal" instead of "hagane"
- there's a "megaphone" attack that was scrapped, its name survived up to final release, as megahorn

want to see some of these re-surface as regional forms or in a future generation

hell, even the town map looks modeled after japan

within accessibility outside abusing the debug tools is silent hill and the two routes west of it up to the gate to old town, where your rival stops your progress and resets the demo

old city appears to be a mix of proto-violet and proto-ecruteak, and has what appears to be a proto-sprout tower and was featured in magazine screenshots
the top-right building in the town is a gym, with proto-falkner as the leader
there is a water way stretching north of the map that leads nowhere, lacking a warp
there is an item ball, unfortunately there is barely anything interactable beyond route 1 and silent hill, so any roles they would have is just speculation at this point

a house on this route can be entered with a scientist NPC and 2 TV+N64 hookups
might've been intended as a way to play the minigames

west town is past the gate, it's proto-goldenrod, with the radio station "J'pm" and a dept. store
team rocket is taking over the radio station - giovanni can be found at the top floor
a rocket grunt stands in front of a house door, opening it looks like a home invasion in progress, with an item ball in front of the TV
the building with the poke ball is a gym, with proto-bugsy as the leader
a bridge extends to the west where a sailor NPC stands, supposedly a ship were to be boarded there, but there is no warp point

the lower left building looks like it was to be an herb shop
this town has the first "league building' - a trainer school on floor 1, then what looks to be the layout for a strength boulder puzzle on floor 2 - the leader uses a generic NPC sprite

because of the canal and bridges, it is believed to be a prototype of canalave in D/P/Pt layout-wise
your rival stands at the town's entrance
the small poke ball building is a fighting dojo, supposedly you were to fight the blackbelts and earn gongu (tyrogue) here
the 2nd floor of the league building is water-themed, again a generic NPC acts as a placeholder
the house to the left of the dojo looks to be the home of the ss anne captain
the building with the fenced yard south of the pokemart is a bar

the northern gate goes to a water route with whirlpools, past that is sugar town
the house next to the cave has a fucked layout
the sugar cave entrance was not yet functional

i caught 2 wulfclofs, one is the usual light brown palette, the other is gray
does not appear to be a glitch as this color variation carries out in every battle

there are holes in places for an unknown purpose
there is an empty house nearest to the west entrance
floor 2 of the league building is ghost themed
agatha supposedly lives in the house nearest to the cave
said cave has no warp

water route to the north would normally be impossible to go across
nothing but tentacool to be found here
but cheating through it goes to north town, not much to see there other than another inaccessible cave

i'm fucking with the debug ROM and there's wild lv30+ pokemon to the east of silent hills, beyond what is regularly playable in the demo

went farther and found skarmory and rhyhorn
i found a route where wolfman are found, but i can't find where for now
the PC storage is functional via debug so go ahead and catch stuff
lot of the places have incomplete collision so the grass are walls and you won't get to catch anything

looking at the map, it'd probably be a short game had the map stayed this way
this build is literally a half-complete R/B/Y rom hack
god bless the late iwata for cleaning up gamefreak's messy code

waiting for hackers to "complete" this demo because it could effectively function as its own game with some work

seems early enough in development for evolution data to be missing for some proti-gen II pokemon as i fed rare candies to my kurusu and it didn't evolve at the usual levels a starter would evolve

wild pokemon are douchebags, they can run before you can even make a move
might as well scum savestates and throw ultra balls at them

you can change the flames at the title screen to musical notes by returning to the title screen from the menu after it

the intro replaces the shellder with omanyte, there's an unused aerodactyl sprite meant to appear in the background alongside lapras
blastoise and venusaur appear in the charizard animation

save files are functional

there's trainer sprites of prototype designs of falkner, bugsy, and jasmine
bugsy and jasmine were completely different
there's a revamp of the gen I male rocket grunt, he would've kept the whip
red, blue, misty, lorelei, bruno, and lance were planned to return at this point in development
unused teacher (M/F), electrician and soldier trainer classes, and an unused character "hiyokko" can be brought up in the battle test in the debug menu, all using early/unused designs
