The first Fox Shrine I should find on the Daimonjiyama Reverse Stray on 3-Jan-2019.

This one is a good deal to the north, and over 6km away from Fushimi Inari Taisha on a forested green hill in the middle of the city. As such, it could technically qualify as a Golden Fox Shrine, but for that, there are not quite enough foxes around. Still, it does feature an impressive amount of Fox Side Shrines which I am subsequently going to cover, so I want to give it a special mention at the very least.

Also, this Shrine probably wins the "Hook, Line and Sinker"-award, for first I only notice the back entrance in the very north, on the other side of a huge road. Knowing by now that red Torii very likely entail foxes, I proceed to the next crossing, cross over to the other side, climb the 50m high hill and keep on going for half a kilometre along the twisted paths of the Yoshidayama Ryokuchi (吉田山緑地 "Fortunate Field Mountain Green Space"), and eventually emerge in the middle of this Shrine. Later on I should depart through the front entrance, but first, there's quite a bunch more Fox Shrines to be had here.

Fox Shrine 1/8 of Takenaka Inari Jinja.

This one is the furthest in, and as such is also the first one I encountered since I'm effectively coming from the back.

It also has the biggest number of foxes, even if they are just a little bit asymmetrical.

By the way, the 稲 of Inari is written a bit unusually in this case, but by now I've been to enough Inari Shrines that I recognize the Kanji even if it's written with variations.

A very small, almost abandoned-looking Shrine, and yet is still offers shelter to a pair of little foxies.

Fox Shrine 4/8 of Takenaka Inari Jinja.

As opposed to the last one, this particular Side Shrine doesn't even have a room, but just a trio of Ookami stones. One of them is clearly legible, the second.... not so much, and the third has either completely weathered away, or it was never inscribed in the first place. Also, it looks like one of the two foxes watching over this Shrine is currently away on an errand or something.

By the way, seeing how many little Ise Shrines I've encountered this time around, I guess I'll have to go visit the Ise Grand Shrine in the Mie Prefecture if I ever get to go to Japan again. After all, the only other with this many branch Shrines around was Fushimi Inari, and I definitely was not disappointed by that one.

Fox Shrine 5/8 of Takenaka Inari Jinja.

This one is a proper tiny Shrine again, and it even has a proper roof for people to stand under while praying.

Two little foxies attend this Shrine, but one of them... well, it's more like one-and-a-half foxies, really.

Fox Shrine 7/8 of Takenaka Inari Jinja.

A nice red Side Shrine attended by a pair of foxies. By now, I've actually already seen quite a number of Yakuryoku Shrines. I guess it makes sense to rever the potency of medicine, especialyl in the times of old.

Also, incredulous though this may seem, I have to stand in lien to pray at this Shrine, for as it happens, another worshiper also is around, paying his respects to the spirits of this place. I wonder if he's here on his own Hatsumoude.

A Side Shrine of Hachi Jinja (八神社 "Eight Shrine"), and the northernmsot Fox Shrine I should find in Kyoto. I find this one just before proceeding to climb Daimonjiyama to the east.

This is a very red Shrine attended by a pair of foxies. I wish I knew what the characters on the "fence boards" represent. They don't appear to be names of either persons, Shrines or places.

Located in front of Hyuuga Daijingu (日向大神宮 "Sunny Place Great Gods Hall"), this little Shrine may or may not be considered a Side Shrine. I count it as its own little Shrine since it is located in front of the gates of the larger Shrine.

I come across this one several hours later, after descending from Daimonjiyama again a few kilometers to the south, and happily find myself welcomed by another pair of foxes.

Chinamini, the straight blue lines drawn "over" the mountains are actually impressive underground channels, that were used to ferry goods between Kyoto and Biwa-ko back in the day.

After coming down from Daimonjiyama, I proceed to walking back to my hostel... no, of course not along the direct path. Instead, I am playing Inari-Tarzan, swinging from one Inari Shrine to the next in search of foxes.

This one turns out to be pretty cool. Invited in by a series of red Torii, I dare zig-zagging my way through narrow alleys between houses that I would have never entered otherwise, and eventually arive at a small Shrine in a cramped courtyard between three buildings and a parking lot. Six foxes await me there.

Aidsuchi, by the way, is the name for the Japanese practice of giving frequent "I am still listening attentively" feedback while someone is talking. This takes the form of quiet "un, un", "hai", or "so, so", and could be compared with "I see", "is that so?" or "uh-huh" in English, only westerners don't usually use Aidsuchi so much. In Japanese, this is a very important practice, especially on the phone. If you fail to give frequent "attentiveness feedback" to a Japanese person, they'll soon stop and ask if you're still there.

A little Inari Shrine located right next to Shiragawa (白川 "White River"). A quartet of little foxies reside within, two of which are more noticable than the smaller pair hiding behind them.

This one is slightly off limits for some reason, so I can take pictures only from the outside, which is still pretty close due to its small overall size.

A notable Inari Shrine that is just short of big. Many foxes can be found on its grounds, and its store sells a notable amount of vulpine merchandise. If I had not already sent a parcel of this stuff home, I would have packed up on more of it right here right now.

Also, some of the foxes watching over this place are of an unique, thick-headed design, giving them a "brainy" look. Plus this is one of those Shrines where one of the right foxes is visibly male.

A Side Shrine of Manzoku Inari Jinja, or perhaps it would be more correct to call this the original shrine before they purchased the first and second Shrine expansions.

Either way, the fox statues here sure are very old style, and there is one thing I have to point out here that is veryy rare indeed: The vixen is on the right side and the visibly male fox is on the left. Normally (or at least in far more cases that I have observed), it is the other way around.
