Vulpine Infinity #28 of Inariyama.

Located at the back of above Shrine, there is a Kitsunemugen that I am going to mention separately, because it's kind of hidden, and not easy to find unless you know it's there. Just follow the path around of the building, and you'll arrive at another infinity of vulpinity.

This is once again a stock photo, but it should be the last one. For the remaining Shrines that I visited on my first visit of Inariyama I have either cellphone pictures or pictures from a later visit. Also, we're now gradually approaching the end of what I found on my first time up that mountain.

Vulpine Infinity #29 of Inariyama.

Still in the vicinity of the last two vulpine Shrines, there is this one which is guarded by a quintet of frogs (yet many foxes still reside within). Interestingly the custom of bequeathing the foxes with red bibs is also extended to the frogs at this Shrine.

It is not the first frog Shrine I come about, but definitely the most prominent.  Frog shrines are popular for wishes and prayers for having people return, because the word for Frog is homophonic to the word for Return: Kaeru.

Vulpine Infinity #30 of Inariyama.

A gauntlet of Shrines while coming down (or going up)  Inariyama flanks the road right and left as I return to the more civilized area of Kyoto, many of which do feature foxes.

This should be the last Kitsunemugen for today, but not the last fox Shrine, and certainly not the last Kitsunemugen I would come across during my time in Kyoto. After all, this was only my first of three trips up the holy mountain.

After a lot of Vulpine Infinities, this is the first "solo" fox  Shrine again. Mostly it is a Shrine dedicated to the eastern Zodiac, with the Dog of the waning year still and the Boar of the coming year already in attendance, but since this is Kyoto, there are naturally still a good number of foxes around.

Finally, the last vulpine Shrine I should find on this longest and most foxy day (and later revisit at night to take pictures of). Altogether, I have visited 147 fox shrines and vulpine infinities on this day alone, which is almost a quarter of my grand total in all of Japan. Were I to count the individual fox Shrines of the Kitsunemugen individually, I'm sure it would be more then half, if not more than two thirds.

Either way, I can now say without a doubt that this is clearly the most massive vulpine Shrine area in all of Japan... and I'm not even finished yet. I would yet ascend Inariyama for two more times and find more fox shrines yet, but that is a story for another day.

Vulpine Infinity #31 of Inariyama.

We now return to our regularly scheduled vulpine madness already in progress.

It is the night of new year - also known as Oomisoka (大晦日 "Day of Great Darkness") - and I am ascending Inariyama for the second time. Naturally, I am taking a different route, which leads me to this Kitsunemugen at the back of a lake by the name of Shinike (新池 "New Pond").

This particular vulpine infinity is not on any map, but you can easily find it by staying on the main path up the mountain, and then eventually turning right when you see a lot of vulpine Shrines standing around. That will lead you straight up to the shore of the lake.

Vulpine Infinity #32 of Inariyama.

This Kitsunemugen is located straight on the main path of the mountain, at the other side of Shinike than Kousou Ookami.

It is quite spectacular tonight, with dozens of prayer candels burning at the main Shrine, illuminating the foxes there with their flickering light, and quite a few people paying their respects. Outside the main Shrine, there's even more foxes to be found, but it's kinda dark for that right now. After all, it is already 23:00 by now, and I have only an hour left to scale the remainder of the mountain.

Another Kitsunemugen along the direct path to the summit of Inariyama, this one being located past the upper crossroad. It is now 23:30, and I am reasonably confident that I will make it to the summit in time.

Once again, there are many, many fox Shrines around here, but one Shrine is attended by a pair of cats instead. They blend in so well with the foxes that it takes me several looks to realize the difference.

The final new Shrine that I should visit in 2018, and quite a vulpine one again. From here, you can clearly see the lights of the city sparkling from below. All these many foxies up here sure have an amazing view.

It's 10 minutes to midnight, and I'm almost at the top.

[SPECIAL ~ NEW YEAR ON INARIYAMA]

I manage to arrive at the summit of Inariyama a few minutes before midnight. I've been here about a week ago on Xmas, this being Vulpine Shrine N°482, Ichinomine Kamisha (一ノ峰上社 "First Summit Upper Shrine"), but this time around, there are even more people around, waiting to perform Hatsumoude (初詣 "First Shrine Visit"), a time-honed ritual for Gantan (元旦 "Original Morning"), the first day of the new year. And even those who don't perform Hatsumoude right at midnight or on the first day of the new year usually do it in the week thereafter.

That having been said, new year in Japan is different than what I'm used to. There are no big fireworks or huge parties, only an initial cheer, and then the new year is welcomed in silence. In the distance, you can quietly hear the bells and gongs of the Temples resound as the people usually proceed to visit a Temple after their Shrine visit, and ring in the new year with one strike of the gong each.

As for me, I don't stand in line for the big Shrine, for there are easily a hundred people waiting (and the line for Fushimi Inari Taisha was even longer, measuring in the magnittude of thousands)...

...but instead pick one of the countless little fox Shrines that are standing around here to perform my own personal Hatsumoude there.

Chase your dream.

Vulpine Infinity #36 of Inariyama.

The first fox Shrine I should visit in 2019, and it's already a Kitsunemugen. Descending from Inariyama, I take a different way down this time around, and thus come across this one (which appears to be officiall Shrine N°12 on the main route) on my way down.

Cutely, the two foxes at them ain Shrine of this particularly infinity are outfitted with more than just bibs.

Vulpine Infinity #37 of Inariyama.

A good distance off the beaten track, along a rather alternative route down Inariyama, I come across this particular Kitsunemugen that clearly was not intended to be viewed by night. Foxes hide in the shadows everywhere, but it's hard to get a proper picture of them, and I really do not want to use a flashlight at a Shrine.

One day I might come back here and see how this place looks by day.

Incidentally, the Inariyama Tunnel cuts beneath the mountain around here, but unless you know it's there, you'd never guess, for the landscape above is completely undisturbed. There's even supposed to be wild boars around. Would that not make for a refreshing start into the year of the boar, getting mauled by boars on day one?

Vulpine Infinity #38 of Inariyama, and the final Vulpine Infinitiy I should find during my visit in Kyoto.

After I finish descending Inariyama without getting mauled by boars (a fantastic experience, second only to not getting eaten by bears, that I can only recommend), I arrive at a settled valley, and think that my night of Fox Shrines and Kitsunemugen has come to an end. However, I should still find one last fox Shrine in the night of the new year.

However, dark though it might be, I still notice a Torii in passing, and checking it out end up inside yet another vulpine infinity, the way through which would lead me back up to Yotsuji, the crossroads.

Finally, after a long time of vulpine overkill, here's a more regular Fox Shrine after all.

I find this one on the first day of the new year while going shopping. Many stores are closed, but the Konbini are always open. This should also be the last fox Shrine I would find on 1-Jan-2019.

On my way there, I notice a few telltale flags and the entrance of a narrow alley, and following them I arrive at this little Shrine that among others also features a pair of foxes inside.

Perhaps most notably, this Shrine also has a board telling about its history, which apart from Japanese is also translated into Chinese, Korean and English.
