Vulpine Infinity #13 of Inariyama.

This is a relatively small Komugen, so it doesn't even appear on G-Maps (it's on OSM though).

This time around, I can't even find a stock photo of this sheltered, vulpine place, so instead here's a 3D view of its position on Inariyama. There's not much to see, however, since trees hide both the Shrines and the Torii road perfectly. To the top left, there's the summit of Inariyama, and below that the valley I've been walking down. This particular Shrine would be in the dead center as you can clearly not see on the picture. =^,~'=

This particular Shrine seems to be dedicated to horses. Nonetheless, plenty of fox guardians can still be found guarding the countless little Side Shrines.

Once again, these pictures, as well as those of the following Shrines, are stock photos, owing to the fact that on the night of the New Year, I took a different route down from here on.

Yet another Kitsunemugen on the way down from Inariyama. On this particular stretch, there's so many of even those that it's hard to even say where one ends and the next begins.

Also, it's around here that cats become unusually common. I wonder if the many stores around here feed them?

There's just so many Kitsunemugen around here, and each of them contains dozens of fox Shrines. Were I to count them individually, I would be well over 600 by now!

When people first told me I absolutely had to come see Fushimi Inari Taisha, I was sceptical, but now I can see that they were right (even if I'm alsmost certain that none of them truly realized the abundance of vulpinity to be found on the holy mountain beyond).

This one is located at the end of a separate set of stairs at the Crossroads, or Yotsutsuji (四つ辻 "Crossorads"). Interestingly, there's not four, but rather five paths here. One leads from where I come, the second one is the other end of the Torii-loop-road to the summit of Inariyama, the third one leads up to this Shrine and later merges with the fourth one, which follows an idyllic route through the mountains and eventually emerges near Tofukuji (and I hear there would be even more fox Shrines along thi trail, but alas, it is one I did not have the chance to walk), and the fifth one leads down the mountain towards Fushimi Inari Taisha.

As you can see, I visited this one during the night of the New Year. Specifically, this is one of the Shrines I re-visited during my ascent to the summit on December 31st, wheras the other nighttime pictures were from my descent after the new year had begun.

The first Kitsunemugen I come across descending from the Crossroads, and there would yet be many more to come. Should it be enough for me to breach even the 500-Fox-Shrines mark?

Once again, this is a stock photo. Although I did walk this path a second time when climbing Inariyama on New Year's Eve, I didn't think of taking pictures just then, oh well.

There's quite a lot of Kitsunemugen along this particular stretch. Pretty much the entire road is covered with vulpine Shrines left and right for those who look.

Since the picture is once again not mine, it doesn't properly capture the vulpine overflow here, but you can still see one of the many foxes in the background to the right of the main altar.

Fox Shrines line this path left and right. Were I to say my typical prayer at each one of them, it would take me at least 15 minutes to walk these 100m, if not longer.

Across the next crossroads, which goes by the name of Mitsutsuji (三ツ辻 "Three Path Crossing") since this time around four paths lead from it instead of five as with Yotsutsuji, lies this next Kitsunemugen.

For this one an the following ones I have my own photos again. For one, I absolutely had to take a picture with my trusty tri-Comm of this flying fox, and for the other, this is a path I walked again at a later date when showing the place to a bunch of other furries. Once again it was already rather dark by then.

EDIT: Oops, not the flying fox Shrine after all. That one was #499. =^,~'=

At this point, the Kitsunemugen become sort of a blur, and it often gets hard to figure out which Shrine is the core around which others grow.

Also, the pictures are still from nighttime, so I apologize if they don't match the actual Shrine, but at the very least, they are all from that general stretch of path.

EDIT: I went over these Shriens again and re-evaluated their relative locations. Now I'm fairly certain I got the right pictures for the right Shrines in this section. =^,~'=

Just an everyday Inari Shrine with everyday Inari Foxes.

It's getting late, but it's actually not as dark as the pictures would suggest. There's still plenty of light left, yet my trusty little camera somehow fails to capture it. Or is this how dark it looks to human eyes, and my fox eyes just pierce the darkness that good?

Also, please note that while I got the address of this palce from Google, I checked that Google fails to accurately procure the place again when searchign for that smae address. Rather weak, but I guess there's nothing that can be done about that. That's why I'm adding the coordinates. That's way more accurate (continental drift nonwithstanding).

Another Kitsunemugen that I first visited by day, but only was able to photograph during my third visit at night. By then, it was pretty dark, and the many foxes here were mostly lurking in the shadows.

The fifth Toyokawa Inari Shrine/Temple (the others having been N°s 10, 20, 164 and 245) I come across on my journey. At this time, I do not yet know that they are leading up to something big and foxy that I should experience three weeks laters, so keep this one in mind!

A conglomeration of fox Shrines right next to Fushimi Toyokawa Inari Hongu, which I also like to call 飛狐社 (Tobigitsunesha, "Flying Fox Shrine") for obvious reasons. This one was special enough that I took a picture of it at daytime, and another at nighttime.

Also, for once, Google is managing to find the address of this place.

The 500th fox Shrine I came across in Japan, and a very special one at that. Most notable here is the Side Shrine Kuchiire Inari Ookami (口入稲荷大神 "Introduction Inari Shrine"), which venerates a deity of matchmaking. You can buy these little statues in sets of three and take them home, praying for the start of a relationship, or also a good job offer or such. Then, once that wish has come true, you can either keep the statues or return them to this Shrine. So I guess each set at this Shrine is the testimony of one such wish come true.

In hindsight I should probably have bought one such set for myself. I'll do it if I ever come to Kyoto again.
