Vulpine Side Shrine 45/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #53 of Inariyama.

This is the first Shrine I've seen dedicated to a pair of great dragon gods. Nonetheless it is watched over by a pair of foxes.

However, regrettably the Torii are positioned so close to the Ookami stone that the first kanji(s) of all the names are cut off. One would need a periscope of sorts to properly look at them.

Another vulpine Shrine with badly worn inscriptions. Fortunately I can make out at least one of them.

Vulpine Side Shrine 47/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #55 of Inariyama.

This one is the final vulpine Shrine of the eastern segment of Kuhouboutaki. Once again, it sports the names of many, many deities, not all of which I can decipher.

It also features two little sacred pots, which are powerful symbols of good fortune, even if the representation in form of a two-dimensional symbol can easily be misinterpreted as a pile of poo.

Vulpine Side Shrine 48/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #56 of Inariyama.

The first shrine of the southern and last segment of Kuhouboutaki. By now my head is buzzing from all the foxes, and my camera is already rehearsing its death rattle.

This one is probably the cutest in terms of vulpine attendence thus far. Just a big stone with two little foxes.

The Kanji of this Shrine is the same as the first Kanji of Morioka in Touhoku, which I visited twice earlier during my journey. Also note that I think it's possible that there might be another Kanji before 盛. However, with the Torii so close to the Ookami stone, there's no way to tell.

Vulpine Side Shrine 54/56 of Guhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #62 of Inariyama.

This is the first Shrine you see when entering Guhouboutaki (note: I got the name slightly wrong earlier) from the street side. Not the first one you pass by the side, but the one that stands straight in front of you.

It is also another interesting example of the harmony between Shintoism and Buddhism here in Japan, having a Shinto Shrine that promotes Buddhist Teachings. The western equivalent would probably be somethink like having a statue of Martin Luther standing in a Catholic Church.

Vulpine Side Shrine 55/56 of Guhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #63 of Inariyama.

I have to specutlate about the name of this one, since the Kanji written on the small red Torii looks like 鷹, but without the small 亻 beneath the 广 and next to the 隹. It could be an old variant of 鷹, or maybe the monk who wrote it simply forgot about it. Not that I would blame him. At 24 strokes, the Kanji 鷹 (hawk) is way up there on the difficulty scale, and one of the ten Kanji with the most strokes that are still in relatively common use.

And finally, the last Vulpine Side Shrine of Guhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #64 of Inariyama.

It is also the first Vulpine Shrine you'd come across when entering Guhouboutaki from the roadside, but that never happens, since the road leading to it is a pretty remote backroad (yeah, Kyoto has these too).

Also take note of the sacred vessel standing in front of the Shrine (the little drop-shaped pot).

Vulpine Side Shrine 1/16 of Aoki Ookami, and Vulpine Shrine #65 of Inariyama.

A little distance further through the wooded hillside of Inariyama, and I stand in front of the next Komugen, which this time around goes by the name of Aoki Ookami. A point of note here: 青 (Ao) is usually translated as "blue", but it is more of a green-blue. For example, the green of traffic lights is referred to as Ao in Japan, even though it is the same color as in the Western World. Also, Ao is usually used to indicate fresh growth or fresh vegetables, so this would be a Shrine dedicated to a tree with fresh leaves.

I stand in front of that sign for a long time, deciding on whether I should risk entering since I am clearly a worshipper.

In the end I decide not to since I also intend to take pictures. As it is, I only take them from the outside. Even without entering th Shrine Grounds, I would still come across quite a number of Vulpine Side Shrines here. Unfortunately, shooting from a distance and angles, I can't always make out the names of the Shrines, such as with this one.

Another forbidden Shrine to deep inside Aoki Ookami that I can actualy reach it, but I can see it from all the way across the yard, together, with the two foxes standing watch over it.

Wish that I was a fox and cross that human barrier on all fours. I'm sure no one would mind.
