A tiny nameless little fox Shrine by the side of the road.

And yet, it contains an amazing little trinket, a miniature Shrine not even 10cm high and with a great love for detail.

I have not seen anything like this anywhere in all of Japan, nor should I again in the months to come, making this tiny nondescript roadside Shrine noteworthy as a BRONZE Fox Shrine at the very least.

An unusual occurrence of foxes, not at a Shrine or Temple, but rather  at a Jizou. These little guardian deities of Buddhist origin can be seen all over Japan. On roadsides, in forests... everywhere.

This particular one is located,  among others of its kind, on the rather large Temple grounds of Joudoji, hidden behind a Shrine that worships Hachiman alongside two other deities.

A second Jizou also has a cute trio of foxies in attendance.

These two should notably be the only Jizou I would find on my journey that get to enjoy vulpine company.

Another Side Shrine of Joudoji, that acts like a hub of sorts for a number of additional fox Shrines.

In fact, the amount of foxes per square metre here is so high, that I am going to award this Side Shrine a SILVER Rank.

The first vulpine Side Shrine of Inamori Oomyoujin, located at the northern end of the file.

Only two little foxies stand watch here, but don't worry: It should yet get much, much foxier.

The second vulpine Side Shrine of Inamori Oomyoujin.

This one is already significantly more vulpine, and features size-10 porcelain fox guardians hidden behind the drapes. They are almost the same size as the fox stone guardians on the outside.

The third vulpine Side Shrine of Inamori Oomyoujin.

A total of five foxies stand watch here. I estimate their size categories as 2, 5 and 8.

The fourth vulpine Side Shrine of Inamori Oomyoujin, and the last Shrine down the line.

Easily the most foxy one of all, this is the one that made it clear for me that Inamori Oomyoujin earned SILVER Rank.

The fifth and final vulpine Side Shrine of Inamori Oomyoujin.

Technically, it is not a Side Shrine of Inamori Oomyoujin per se, but rather of the superordinate Takano Oomyoujin (making it more of a Sibling Shrine). But since it is smaller and still located only a few metres away from Inamori Oomyoujin, I will count it as one of the Shrines that makes the entirety a SILVER fox Shrine complex.

A tiny little Inari Shrine in a backroad, hidden perfectly from view except from a single angle. It should take me a while to find this one, even knowing it was there.

Two pairs of foxies watch over it. This should also the final vulpine Inari Shrine that I would find today and in Onomichi. It has been quite a big yield for a small town like this though.

Located about 20km west of Onomichi is the seaside town of Tadanoumi (忠海 "Faithful Ocean") which serves as the gateway to Ookunoshima (大久野島 "Big Long Time Field Island"), also known as Rabbit Island for its abundance of lapine population.

Unsurprisingly, there  should not be any fox Shrines on the rabbit island. However, there is one to be found in Tadanoumi, which, together with its Side Shrines, sports a considerable vulpine population.

The second vulpine Side Shrines of above Inari Jinja.

This one features the bare minimum of vulpinity, with only a single, broken foxie residing in the middle one of the three structures making up this Side Shrine.

Moving east along the length of Honshu, this is the first vulpine Shrine I should find in Okayama (岡山 "Hill Mountain"), exploring the city together with a friend I met some time ago in Appi-Kogen on the other end of Honshu. Now our paths cross once more.

Two little foxies make this Side Shrine their home, and they are well nourished with a Mikan easily big enough to feed the two for weeks.

A little vulpine Shrine located in a little back road right next to one of the biggest intersections in Okayama. Finding in should include a daring venture into a nondescript alley, much to the unease of my companion.

We are rewarded, though, with this Shrine abounding in vulpinity, featuring not also the common fox statues, but also the rarer fox lanterns.
