A very remarkable little Side Shrine of Iyo Inari Jinja. This one is located on a forested hill behind the main Shrine and advertised by a row of red Torii.

Within are not only many fox statues and lanterns, but also a painting of a flame-tailed fox carrying Oinari-sama through the skies. This is one of the very few depictions of multi-tailed foxes I should come across during my travels.

Interesting, the way "Kyuubi" is written here means "Long Time Beauty" as opposed to "Nine Tails"; that would be the characters 九尾. Japanese has quite a lot of homonyms like that.

Incidentally, they also sell little fox Omamori  for 700¥ a piece, of which I should naturally purchase one, along with another 300¥ donation for this wonderful Shrine to make it a round 1000¥.

The other vulpine Side Shrine of Iyo Inari Jinja. This one is located to the left and behind the main Shrine.

It's not really much of a great shrine despite the name, but at the very least the foxies here are well stocked with sake.

A vulpine Shrine I should find in the little coastal town of Iyo-Nagahama on Shikoku after a very short visit on the nearby Cat Island of Aoshima.

This one is pretty well hidden in a hillside town district, and I definitely did not go the "officially approved" way of getting there. I think there has to be a way to get there from below, but I somehow ended up going above and then climbing down the hillside. Oh well...

The last vulpine Shrine I should find on Shikoku, this one being located back in Matsuyama.

This one is right next to the famous Dougo Onsen, and the legendary Prince Shoutoku is said to have already bathed in this Onsen in the sixth century.

The first vulpine Shrine I should find in Onomichi, back on Honshu. This amazing little city is famous for its multitude of Shrines and Temples, as well as its unique harp-shaped city plan where roads stretch out lengthwise through parallel valleys, joined by a coastal road to the south and a perpedicular road through a diagonal valley further in the north, but not interconnected otherwise.

Incidentally, I should run into this particular Shrine after taking a wrong bus and ending up in front of Onomichi Station, still being burdened with all my luggage and questing for my next Airbnb place, and I am willing to bet you pizza that the Lady Inari herself had her hand in this, putting me in the wrong bus in order to let me find this Shrine on the very first day of my stay.

The stretch of water to the south, by the way, is neither a really big river nor a lake, but rather a narrow strait of the Seto Inland sea, separating the island of Mukaishima (向島 "Opposite Island") from the mainland. A series of bridges known as the Shimanami Kaidou (島波海道 "Island Waves Water Way") connects Shikoku to Honshu over a chain of islands, and the panorama there is among the most beautiful I've ever seen.

The first vulpine Shrine I should find on my exploratory stray around Onomichi on 16-Dec-2018.

This somewhat derelict Shrine is located on top of Senkoujiyama (千光寺山 "Thousand Lights Temple Mountain"), which is also home to a number of other interesting spots, such as the eponymous Senkouji, Onomichi Castle, and the very adorable Lovers' Sanctuary.

A tiny little Side Shrine of aforementioned Senkouji, located in a small rock crevice to your right as you climb a stone stairway to a slightly larger Side Shrine.

And yet, there's a family of little foxies living here.

A tiny little Shrine with a tiny little fox inside that I found in the back streets of Onomichi, between the houses on the eastern hillside of Senkoujiyama.

Maybe it's not even a Shrine, but a Jizou? Or it could be a combination of both Shinto and Buddhist worship taking place here. The incense burning for one is a typical Buddhist practice, while the foxes are more aligned with Shinto.

A tiny Inari Shrine that I first noticed while riding by on the wrong bus a day earlier at my arrival in Onomichi, and made a note about visiting.

So here I am now, in the presence of two little foxies. Incidentally, this should also be the northernmost fox Shrine I should visit in Onomichi.

A tiny little minimalistic Inari Shrine right next to above one.

Small though it may be, it features an arrangement of six little foxies, one of which clearly has seen better times.

A little Side Shrine of a larger Shrine in the heart of Onomichi.

Three little foxies watch over this Shrine, while a fourth one seems to have abandoned his post, leaving only an empty pedestal behind. Maybe he had to go for little foxes?

An Inari Shrine in the back roads of Onomichi.

On of the two fox guardians has had the misfortune of having his muzzle broken off. Someone apparently tried to fix that, but somehow the replacement is more reminiscing of a kappa than a fox.
