Finally an Inari Shrine with a proper name again. This charming little Shrine is located one town further down the line, in Yasugi (安来 "Peaceful Coming"), and is a Side Shrine of the eponymous Yasugi Jinja  (安来神社 "Peaceful Coming Shrine").

I really don't want to say "more of the same", but that's pretty much what it is. Admittedly a number larger than the last one, this one also features Shimenawa-collared fox guardians, a fox hole (albeit somewhat inconveniently located), as well as a fox "graveyard" beneath the Shrine.

Yet another bit further down the road, this Shrine is located back in Yonago, in the crotch of railway fork where the line to Sakaiminato branches up from the San-In Main Line.

This Side Shrine is located in a shady copse next to Kanda Jinja, which unfortunately means that I should get stung to pieces by mosquitoes during my pursuit of foxes... and that despite wearing "Hello Kitty Skin Vape" insect repellent.

One more Side Shrine of Kanda Jinja in Yonago,  located right next to the last one.

This one features another of them prominent fox holes, this time at the back and adorned with a little Torii.

The last vulpine Shrine I should visit on the second half of the Odyssey Ride. By now, it's already getting rather late.

Nonetheless I should take a little detour to visit this small Shrine on the side of a hill next to the mighty Hinogawa (日野川 "sun field river"), and I should not be disappointed: In addition to a few big and a big number of tiny foxes, I also encounter a new medium: A fox painting on a lamp, as well as two foxes carved in a stone that might once have adorned the fork of a Shrine roof.

This particular Inari Shrine is located much closer to my home in Daisen, in the nearby village of Yodoe (淀江 "eddy creek") located on the side of a forested hill.

Hiyoshi Jinja, the Main Shrine, is particularly notable for having a level railroad crossing.  That's right, the tracks of the San-In Main Line run  right through the middle of the  Shrine Grounds, and you have to cross the tracks in order to get from the antecourt to the main part of the temple, which is in its entirety located within the forest.

A Side Shrine of a Buddhist Temple, and the closest vulpine  Shrine to my home in Daisen, a little more then a kilometre away.

Interestingly, the little offertory box in this little Side Shrine is almost full, to the point where I can barely fit in my own humble donation. Either this Side Shrine is particularly popular, or the box doesn't get emptied all that often.

This one is notably not an Inari  Shrine, yet foxes still watch over it.

This is not the first Dragon Shrine I come across on my journey, but it is the first one that I feel deserves special notion as for its amazingly detailed wooden carving above the altar, which is even more impressive in person. Seriously, standing there looking at it, it seems to me that the dragon might come to life any second now.

A nameless little Inari Shrine in the middle of Yodoe. This one is the only other vulpine Shrine within 10 STEPs of my home here in Daisen.

This one is literally off the map, despite being in the centre of the village, and I should come across it by chance and chance alone. Or maybe the guiding hand of the goddess guided me here?

As the ultimate challenge of my stay in this region, I should eventually dare mighty Mt.  Daisen itself. I have already covered the first 850m of altitude by bike by the time I make it to this vulpine Temple at the base, but that's yet only half of the gruesome ascent to the 1711m high summit.

And yes! You've read right! This one is something special, as for once, the foxes do  not stand watch over a Shrine, or the Side Shrine of a Temple, but over the main hall of a proper Buddhist Temple, incense and all. On my entire journey, I haven't seen foxes as guardians of a Temple yet, so this is something entirely new, and special, and hopefully a good omen for my impeding ascent um the mighty mountain.

After having mastered Mt. Daisen using costly shadow techniques, I come across this little  Side Shrine of Oogamiyama Jinja (大神山神社 "Great God Mountain Shrine") on my way home, which blissfully goes downhill all the way, making it an easy ride atop my  trusty bicycle.

Maybe this one shouldn't count, having only a single little fox. But a Shrine is a Shrine, and a Fox is a Fox, and that's what counts for me. =^,~'=

The second vulpine Side Shrine of Oogamiyama Jinja (大神山神社 "Great God Mountain Shrine"), located on the other side of the main temple, across from Chuuguu Jinja. This one features notably more foxes, and someone seems to have given them a generous offering of... chestnuts?!? Oh well...

This should also be the  final vulpine Shrine I should visit here in Daisen before moving on to the next location. I've  found quite a lot of foxies around here on my bike-ly exporation tours, so I am happy and content to move on.

It should, however, unexpectedly get yet more vulpine! It happens at the final underpass I need to traverse on my way back home - the sun has already set by then - that I see a shy animal peek into the tunnel at the far side, and quickly duck back into the bushes upon noticing me. At first, I think it might have been a cat, but as I emerge from the other side of the underpass, an all, too familiar shape quickly darts by me and into the tunnel. It's already too dark to tell for sure, but the shyness, the size, the shape of the head, and most importantly of all, the fluffy tail all indicate that I have just seen the sixth wild fox I've seen in my entire life. That makes three times in Japan now, two of which have been in Hokkaido, and that means that I have now officially seen as many wild foxes in the last 4 months here in Japan as in 30 years in Germany. Amazing!

Another month, another island, another city, another vulpine Inari Shrine.

This is the first vulpine shrine I should find during my stay in the city of Fukuoka (福岡 "Lucky Hill") on Kyushu (九州 "Nine States"), the third-largest island making up Japan.

This one is a Side Shrine of the larger Najima Jinja (名島神社 "Famous Island  Shrine"), from where a looooong row of Torii attended by a pair of foxes leads to this little Shrine.

The closest vulpine Shrine to my home in Fukuoka - located about 6 STEPs away - and a Side Shrine of the might Kashiigu (香椎宮 "Incense Mallet Hall").

This one is also located right next to a very interesting and unlikely other Shrine, but I am  going to write about that in my next post.

This one is located directly next to above vulpine Shrine, as in directly directly. You can even walk from one over to the other without having to  leave through the Torii.

The most unusual companion for  a vulpine Shrine for sure. I guess those foxes will never go hungry, or could there be a deeper meaning to this peculiar union?
