The third of the four vulpine Side Shrines of Sakakiyama Inari Jinja.

I was actually not sure whether or not to nominate Sakakiyama Inari Jinja as one of the golden Fox Shrines, until I came across this little Side Shrine, that is.

One glance at it tells me that we have a winner. I don't even bother trying to count the many, many foxies around here. The result would be the same every time anyway. I concede defeat at the paws of these cute little foxes and proceed to having a squealing fox-gasm.

I don't think there's quite as many foxes her as in #52 Anamoriinari Okunomiya, but at the very least we have a solid second place here.

The last of the four vulpine Side Shrines of Sakakiyama Inari Jinja.

Located literally right next to #161, these two foxies pale in comparison to the huge skulk residing next door. However, they are still adorably cute.

The final vulpine Shrine I should find in Morioka.

This one is actually a Side Shrine of Sakurayama Jinja (桜山神社 "Cherry MountainShrine"), which is located at the northern end of the Morioka Castle Grounds, and only a short walk away from Ishiwarizakura, the stone-breaking cherry tree.

Don't expect to see a castle around here though. Tragically, the castle burned down not even two years after its lengthy construction finally completed, and was never rebuilt. The extensive fortifications are all that remain, and form a nice park today.

The first vulpine Shrine I should find in Sapporo, and quite possibly the one with the most foxes in this city. Also, this should be the first vulpine Shrine I would find off Honshu, and on Hokkaido.

Two foxes stand guard outside, and  13 more are to be found within. Most notable, however, are the two big fox statues flaking the altar on the inside. I didn't see any fox statues of this proportion yet, not even the ones at #114 Anamori Inari Jinja were quite this big.

A little private Inari Shrine I should spy over a fence while walking from a supermarket to a coin laundry.

Incredulously, even though I should later spent a full month in Sapporo, this would be the last vulpine Shrine I should find in the city. I attribute this to a combination of three factors that I like to call "being busy", "Sapporo having poor public transport and me not having a bicycle to get around" and "the Shrine density on Hokkaido is significantly lower than on Honshu".

The first vulpine Shrine I should find in Asahikawa on a trip to the north.

According to my local host, this district once used to be a brothel, and the courtesans venerated Inari to keep them from harm.

The only vulpine Shrine I should find in Wakkanai, the northernmost town of Japan, and with it quite possibly the northernmost vulpine Shrine in all of Japan.

It should also be the last fox Shrine I would find in May, as well as the last fox Shrine I should find for over a month due to my subsequent stay in Sapporo being mostly fox free, with the brief exception of seeing a live fox slink through the gardens of my  host family's home early one morning. The ravens loudly objected to the vulpine's presence, and eventually I got up to see what the ruckus was about, just in time to see the little fox jump over a fence and into the neighbours' garden.

The only vulpine Shrine I should find in all of June, and the first vulpine Shrine I should see for over a month. It should make up for it by being one of the most special fox Shrines along my journey, on par with #150.

This one in located inside Kitami Kitakitsune Bokujou, Japan's other place where you can enter a half-hectare big fox run to be together with real foxes... and tanukis.

Naturally, I have also taken a video of this amazing place:

I've also got more pictures and videos on my travel blog in Book II ~ Chapter 8 ~ An East Side Story .

The first vulpine Shrine I should find in July, and definitely the easternmost one in Japan, for starting now, I'm only going west.

Unlike with #169, however, I'm almost certain that there have to be fox Shrines futher east than this - after all, there's still a whopping 15,000 km² east of here. I just didn't happen to come across them.

Also, in case you are wondering why there are so many Fushimi Inari Jinjas around... those are all branch Shrines of the famous Fushimi Inari Jinja in Kyoto. In Shinto Religion practice, a Kami can be "branched off" and carried to another Shrine by a priest. That new Shrine will then inherit the name of the parent Shrine.

I should come upon this Inari Shrine going  nothwest after visiting cape Erimo.

This one holds special meaning to me, for on that very road, I should see a fox crossing from one side to the other, right between my car and an oncoming truck. Fortunately, it made  it to the other side unharmed. This should be the second time I should see a wild fox on Hokkaido, and the fifth time in all of my life.

Visiting this Shrine, I thank Oinarisama for the survival of the little fox in addition to my usual prayers.

The one vulpine Shrine I should find in Chitose, and the final fox Shrine I should find on Hokkaido. Even though I was on this northernmost island of Japan for 6 weeks, I only found 10 vulpine Shrines altogether. I've found more than that in Tokyo in a single day!

Anyway, this one is a little bit special again  since the Shrine these two foxes watch above is not an Inari Shrine, but rather the main Shrine of Chitose City. Go foxes, go!

The first, vulpine Shrine I should find during my stay in remote, rural Appi-Kogen in the mountains of Iwate, located in the Tohoku Region of Honshu. It should also be the only one located in the rural area, while the others I would find while staying here should be discovered during trips to the somewhat nearby city of Morioka. There aren't any big foxes around, but eight little ones are huddling together deep inside next to the altar.

Shrines are sparse in this part of the land. Fortunately, my host kindly took me  on a ride around the countryside so I could visit some Shrines. Incidentally, despite having lived here for decades, she would later say that she never knew there were so many Shrines around here, and thanked me for teaching her something new about the place she calls her home.

And we're back in Morioka again. This is still during my time in Appi-Kogen, yet my host should take me along a shopping trip to Morioka, during which I had some free time to explore the surroundings, and thus come across this Shrine.

This one is currently undergoing renovations. Luckily for me, the fox statues outside are already finished, shiny nice and new.
