The Travelling Fox in Japan
« on: Mar 19 2018, 04:06 AM »
Hi there everyone,

it has been some time, and I don't know how many people are still around here, and if any of them will remember me but...

I think this deserves to go on here.

Anyway, I've finally made my way to Japan, and am making a point of visiting as many Inari Shrines as possible. Big, small, it doesn't matter.

I'll present the shrines I found in this thread, one at a time. I wonder how many it'll be in the end.  :)

Nested between two houses in a backroad, there is this modest shrine. Two little foxes guard the altar, which has offerings of Aburaake, the favourite food of foxes, and sake arranged on top of it.

The first Inari shrine I ever visited in my life, and entirely by accident too. I was originally looking for geocaches, when one of them led me to this little shrine hidden in a backroad. I would have never found it otherwise, and I'm so happy that I did. :)

A little side shrine next to a large Hachiman shrine. It is not uncommon for large shrines to have side shrines to Inari, as I have observed.

This one is amazing! There's tons of little fox statues all around, making it feel as a shrine to foxes as a whole. Even a month later, I didn't find a shrine this vulpine anywhere in Tokyo.

I actually made a video of my visit to this amazingly foxy shrine. Here it is:

(Does anyone know how to embed this video in the post?)

A shrine next to the language school I visited. I didn't realize it was an Inari Shrine at first, but then I noticed the little fox statues watching over the inner altar in the sanctuary.

I apologize for the blurry image quality, but you can still make out the little foxes in the middle. If my way ever leads me near that particular shrine again, I'll make sure to take a better picture.

A shrine I found on the way to a job interview. I prayed there for success.

Hidden in the backroads of Minamiaoyama (South Blue Mountain), this shrine doesn't have a proper address, and yet it's still kept in good shape and frequented by the locals. The red flag at the shrine entrance is a common sight to make the presence of smaller, hidden shrines known to people passing through the area.

A shrine at a the corner of a relatively busy road, right next to the Omote-Sando station. Hidden in the back roads, there's also the "Cafe Kitsune" and a boutique by the name of "Maison Kitsune". Regrettably, neither of them have anything fox related.

A pair of grim guardian foxes stand watch over this shrine to ward off evil spirits, one holding a scroll of teachings, and the other a 星の玉 (Hoshi no Tama, "Star Orb") in their fangs.

A shrine at the corner of a backroad, near a channel covered by the Tokyo Expressway.

The Kanji beneath the left guardian fox here reads "offering" (献). The one on the right being an old writing of 奉, meaning "offer, observance, present, dedication".

Nice pics. Making me quite jealous, actually. Visiting a shrine is something I've always wanted to do.

I'm glad you like it. I figured if I was going to make a point out of visiting as many Inari shrines as possible, I might as well document and share it. And where would that be, if not here?  :)

But really, if you want to, make it happen! If visiting an Inari Shrine is your goal, even just a week or two in Tokyo would be enough. If you cook for yourself and are content with staying in hostels, Tokyo is surprisingly cheap. I'm currently getting by on about 30$ per day, all inclusive. Plus the vast majority of signs and machine have an English option, so you don't even need to be able to speak Japanese.

Anywhere, here's for foxes everywhere!

A little shrine crammed between two houses in the backroads of the Eitai (永代 "Permanence") neighborhood.

The foxes outside are encaged to protect them from vandalism... I guess?. Also, there's four more little foxes inside the shrine.

A little shrine that seems to be part of the house behind it. I wonder if the owners of this house are also the caretakers of this shrine?

Four little foxies watch over this shrine, cleverly concealed by fragrant foliage.

A shrine in the backroads of Chuo, located between two high-rise office buildings. Judging from the name of the shrine, I assume these two companies sponsored the shrine.

This should be the first of a trio of Inari shrines that were excessively close together in this neighbourhood.  A good place for foxes I presume. These foxies certainly don'T seem to lack for drink. ^_^

The second of a trio of Inari shrines that were excessively close together in this neighbourhood. The red bibs are a common sight with fox statues, and are given to them by the locals as a sign of respect.

Actually, I came across this one while a caretaker was doing maintenance on the shrine. We got talking, and after I was somehow able to communicate my interest in Shinto, Inari and Foxes to him, he even opened the shrine doors for me to allow me to take a picture of the inside. Yay!

The last of a trio of Inari shrines that were excessively close together in this neighbourhood. These three shrines are actually located on opposing sides of the border of the Chuo- and Chiyoda districts, which explains why they have quite different addresses despite being so close to one another.

This shrine is flanked by tall residential blocks on three sides, sitting in an alcove of urban cliffs. I wonder how it got its name.

The final Inari shrine I should find on my stray on 24-Feb-2018.

Hidden in a road just parallel to a major road near one of the bigger channels, I especially like the nursing little fox kit beneath the female fox.

I came across this shrine on my way back from doing laundry at a local coin laundry. I was actually looking for this one on the day before too, but couldn't find it.

"Inaka" is actually just another transcription for 稲荷, meaning the same as "Inari". The Kanji 納 below the left fox can be read as "settlement", "reap", "pay" or "store", while the Kanji 奉 below the left fox means as much as "offer", "present" or "dedication".
