A Side Shrine of Taishougun Jinja (大将軍神社 "Great Commander Shrine").

Though nominally a bear Shrine, four foxes can be found watching over it. The outer pair looks particularly fierce though.

A Turtle Shrine attended by foxes of a very new and unique make. Here, the vixen is to the left again.

Also, it should be noted that this Shrine uses a very complex variant of the "Turtle" Kanji (龜 instead of 亀). It's a Kanji that's not used in newspapers or taught in schools, but somehow it still appear in names such as these.

A Shrine that is literally located in the middle of the road. Two foxes watch over it, the male of whom is shily hiding his face.

Incidentally, a Geocache is hidden right behind that Shrine. I wonder if the foxes are watching over that one too?

A Side Shrine of Nishiki Tenmangu (錦天満宮 "Brocaded Heavenly Full Hall"), located at the eastern end of Nishiki Kouji Doori (錦小路通り "Brocaded Alley Road"), located on the other side of Kamogawa (鴨川 "Duck River"), and thus a good bit further into the heart of Kyoto.

This Shrine is located inside a pretty small quadrangle, and is usualyl full of people. The space is so cramped that I have a hard time getting a good shot of the little Inari side Shrine with its nine foxes in different sizes. Having trouble finding the last two? Look closely at the shadows in the back and you'll see two big dark foxes standing in stark contrast to the small white foxies.

A Side Shrine of a Buddhist Temple, which is already a little bit further down the line. By now it's already getting dark, which means that my plan of taking the train up to Daimonjiyama and walking back down has worked out perfectly: I just knew that I'd end up spending so much time chasing Shrines that it would get late, and better it gets dark while I'm on my way back through the city than up the mountain.

This little Side Shrine is also kind of special, since a pair of genuine dog statues is watching over the Shrine together with four foxes. These must be the first such statues I've seen in all of Japan.

A Tiny Shrine outside a house that I should come across while finally approaching Kyoto Station, and with it the end of my stray today. This should be the final fox Shrine I would find today.

Two little foxies watch over this Shrine (and only one of the pair is visible on the pictures that I made with great diffuclty in the dimming light). It'S also a very unusual style of Shrine. I should visit it again during the day sometime to have a better look at it.

The final vulpine Shrine I should find in Kyoto, after what seems like an eternity of vulpinity in this amazing city. Fittingly, I should find it again on Inariyama, during my third and final visit, whiel showing a bunch of furries the amazing vulpinity of this place.

As a result of trying out one new path along the way, I find one new Shrine as well, and though it is not that dark yet, the trees filter out much of the light, plunging this final foxy Shrine into the shadows.

The first Vulpine Shrine I should find on my visit to Nara, the City of Deer, on 8-Jan-2019. This one is located pretty much squat in the middle of the park with the most deer in it, and thus has fence around it in order to prevent deer, not people, from venturing inside.

There are not quite as many fox Shrines around here as deer, but I should still find a fair number of them on my day in this amazing city.

One of those rare Tanuki Shrines! This one is a Side Shrine of Fukuuin (不空院 "Not Empty Temple"). I come across it after a loooong trip through Nara featuring a total of 47 less notable Shrines (one of which - Kasuga Taisha - is a cultural heritage site).

Unlike in the Side Shrine of Yanagamori Jinja (#60), the three Tanuki here are not depicted with large testicles. However, if I interpret the inscriptions correctly, then the names of the two Tanuki to the left and to the right are Enmusubi-san and Enkiri-san respectively. The little painted priest Tanuki in the middle, meanwhile, seems to be of a generic brand, sicne I've already seen one of these back in Yudanaka.

It is not uncommon to see cow statues at somne Shrines as a symbol of prosperity, but this is the first Shrine I've come across that has the cows flanking the Shrine entrance as guardians... and wearing foxy bibs to boot!

It also has a vulpine Side Shrine, but I'll come to that in a bit. Either way, Nara sure has a multitude of animal Shrines, plus you can find deer statues and motifs all over the town.

And here's aforementioned vulpine Side Shrine of Naramachi Ten Jinja, and the first fox Shrine I've found for a whopping 56 Shrines now, making this, count-wise, the biggest gap in fox Shrines I've encountered, tied with the one in Okinawa. A pair of rather big foxes watch over this little Side Shrine.

For once, this is a vulpine Shrine that has non-vulpine Side Shrines. Two foxes watch over this one even though it's not an Inari Shrine.

Also, this is the one where my camera should die once again. Looks like I took to many videos of deer while I was here. Good thing I still have my trusty tri-Comm.

A Side Shrine of Sudou Tennousha (崇道天皇社 "Way of Praising the Emperor Shrine"), located in the South of Nara.

A total of eight foxes watch over this Shrine. That's more than I've seen in the entire rest of Nara so far.

Interestingly, the vixen wears a white bib here, making a nice contrast to the red the tod is wearing. Red and white are traditional lucky, sacred and festival colors in Japan.

A Side Shrine of Goryou Jinja (御霊神社  "Honorable Spirit Shrine"), which appears to have a good-luck tradition of tying ropes around the legs of the Komainu in front of the gates.

Inside, this little fox Shrine with another octet of vulpines awaits among a number of other Side Shrines.

Also, this particular Side Shrine houses an Enmusubi-no Kami (縁結びの神 "God of Matchmaking"), so it's a good place to pray for luck in relationships.

A Side Shrine of Gangouji Fudoudou (元興寺不動堂  "Origin Retreiving Temple Unmoving Hall"), which once hosted a great five-story pagoda.

Getting there was not easy since it's in the middle of the block and there's only one accessway, and with my luck I naturally had to run around 7/8 of the block before finally finding it.

There's this cute and rustic little fox Shrine in here too, which is guarded by one big fox (who is visibly male and unusualyl to the left in absence of a mate), and 10 more or less little foxies as well.
