Vulpine Shrine 2/5 of Nanamentaki, and Vulpine Shrine #82 of Inariyama.

More battered and broken foxes await at this tiny little Shrine. They are not exactly "missing" their tails, but they are not exactly attached either.

Once more, the names are kinda hard to make out due to eclectic writing, as well as the fact that the subordinate names are barely visible, apparantly etched into the stone half-heartedly later on.

Vulpine Shrine 3/5 of Nanamentaki, and Vulpine Shrine #83 of Inariyama.

A little Side Shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of knowledge, music, water and everything that flows. It's rare to see foxes in attendance at her Shrines, but here they are.

Also, I have to point out that "弁戝天" is a very unusual writing for "Benzaiten", the most common one being "弁財天". However, the leading "弁" and trailing "天" are pretty much telltale signals for a Benzaiten Shrine, and with a little research I was able to figure out that "戝" can be pronounced "zai", thus making it very likely that this is just another alternate spelling for Benzaiten.

Vulpine Shrine 4/5 of Nanamentaki, and Vulpine Shrine #84 of Inariyama.

This Shrine is a little bit up the hills and woods from Nanamentaki, but it still somehow feels like it's part of this particular general conglomeration.

Once again, it is a huge heap of minor Shrines, and at this point - and with only one bar of my camera's battery remaining - I decide to ignore all non-vulpine Shrines on my way, and not fret too much about getting all the names of a Shrine on-film.

This particular one features an unfamiliar name though: Ukanomitama (宇迦之御魂 "Honourable Spirit of Eaves"), which is a spirit of foodstuffs, especially rice. As such, it is probably related to Inari in some way. Another interesting thing here is that the little fox guardians are silver, which is not a color I recall having seen before.

The final Vulpine Shrine of Nanamentaki, and Vulpine Shrine #85 of Inariyama.

The central Shrine of this particular conglomeration, attended by a pair of stone foxes.

There are many, many, many other Ookami around, but for the sake of simplicity, I am not going to count them as part of this particular fox Shrine.

Vulpine Shrine 1/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #86 of Inariyama.

By now, I am finally getting the picture that all of Inariyama is one big accumulation of fox Shrine amalgamates, or rather that foxes have replaced the more traiditional Komainu at almost all of these Shrines... and then some. Either way, even jsut the sheer amount of Shrines and with it the Shrine Density is unparalleled anywhere else in Japan.

Like this: Shirakiku no Taki (白菊ノ滝 "Waterfall of White Chrysanthemum"), which covers an entire hillside with its many, many, many Side Shrines, roughly a third of which are attended by foxes.

Vulpine Shrine 2/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #87 of Inariyama.

A nice little shrine with very lithe little foxes watching over it. As you can see, this one stands perpedicular to the slope.

Also, while the Kanji are clearly legible, I can't seem to find the first Kanji of the second-to-last name in any dictionary. I guessed at a similar looking Kanji, but then the name doesn't really make any sense, so I probably guessed wrong. Oh well. =^,~'=

Vulpine Shrine 3/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #88 of Inariyama.

Later that same hillside, there's one of the smallest Vulpine Shrines I should find during my journey, attended by a quartet of foxies, one of whom has sadly lost his tail.

Vulpine Shrine 4/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #89 of Inariyama.

Another foxy shrine up the slopes, this one featuring what appears to be a custom-made fox design.

Incidentally, I really hope that one day I'll be able to figure out the true meaning of all those Suehiro (末廣) Shrines.

Vulpine Shrine 5/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #90 of Inariyama.

Once again, the vulpinity of this place is quite overwhelming, and so I end up speaking collective prayers for all the Shrines around me, lest this is as far as I come today.

By the way, I notice that there are a lot of Ooiwa (大岩) Shrines around here. I wonder what's the story with that.

Vulpine Shrine 6/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #91 of Inariyama.

This one is the literally highest Side Shrine of Shiragiku no Taki, located at the top end of the longest flight of stairs, which is flanked by a pair of great fox statues.

Vulpine Shrine 7/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #92 of Inariyama.

Right to the left of the previous one, there is this fox Shrine with the unsusual names. For once, neither of the names ends with the usual suffixes 大神, 大明神, 神社 or 宮.

Instead, the first name ends with 大人, which is normally read "Otona" and simply means "adult", but I think in this context, the more literal translation of "great person" makes more sense. Likewise, 命 usually means "life", but I feel that here the more archaic meaning of "destiny" is more fitting.

One Shrine further to the left, and at the very top right corner of Shiragiku no Taki, there is this relatively new vulpine Shrine. Although it still looks brand new, it actualyl is already several years old - the Kanji on the bottom identifying it to have been built in December 2015. Simultaneously, further to the right, there's yet another Ouiwa Shrine, attended by a pair of foxes. There seems to be quite a few of them aroudn here as well, and honestly, I wonder if the 王岩 and 大岩 Shrines have the same roots, considerung they are pronounced exactly the same.

Vulpine Shrine 11/22 of Shiragiku no Taki, and Vulpine Shrine #96 of Inariyama.

One more fox Shrine in the row of fox Shrines at the very top of Shiragiku no Taki, and by far not the last one.

Featuring all three of Suehiro, Shiragiku and Ooiwa, every single name on this Shrine is familiar to me by now.
