A Shrine in the middle of the woods of Inariyama, a good distance off the Endless Torii Corridor. Purce chance and vulpine curiosity brought me here.

This is a unique place where four foxes guard the corner of an elevated square roughly ten metres each side, housing dozens of unenshrined Kami tablets.

Also, with this one, I now have one Shrine for every day of the year, accounting for leap years.

I should probably have stopped there, but I did not. The result would be an infinity ofFox Shrines that is yet to follow.

And so it begins... the first Shrine of Komugen (狐無限 "Fox Infinity").

I walk down a back path through a bamboo forest to get here. Lured by Geocaches, I instead find a glade full of Fox Shrines, centered around a Temple by the name of Kuhouboutaki (弘法々瀧 "Spreading Buddhist Teachings Waterfall), the amount of vulpinity around here would be enough to warrant a GOLDEN ranking on its own, but I should come across just so many more places like this on my tour around Inariyama that giving each of them a GOLDEN ranking would sort of ruin the system. As such I decide to include all the vulpine Shrines I find on Inariyama under the roof of the CRYSTAL ranked Fushimi Inari Taisha.

Anyway, this is only the first of a total of 56 vulpine Shrines that I should find in this glade alone.

Vulpine Side Shrine 2/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #10 of Inariyama.

The interesting thing here is that all of these are unenshrined Kami, and most of the time there are multiple per Shrine, almost all of them attended by at least a pair of foxes.

By the way, I have already seen another Mashikou Shrine at Fukuoka, at the Silver Fox Shrine near Nishikouen, but I still don't know what it means. Maybe I'l lbe able to figure it out some day...

Vulpine Side Shrine 3/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #11 of Inariyama.

This Shrine is one of the more elaborate ones, featuring even a tiny stone Shrine behind the pair of guardian foxes.

Vulpine Side Shrine 4/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #12 of Inariyama.

A weathered old Ookami is the heart of this minimalistic Side Shrine attended by a more recent pair of foxes.

It's age becomes apparent not only by the fact that the first kanji of its name is weathered so badly that I can't make it out on either the stone nor the stone plaque on the Torii, but also because I can't decipher the second Kanji despite it being a simple combination. However, all current dictionaries agree: There is no such Kanji today. It must be quite old indeed.

Vulpine Side Shrine 5/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #13 of Inariyama.

A Shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, knowledge and everything that flows, attended by a pair of foxes.

Once again, I could not decipher the inscription on its own, but when combined with the triforce-like symbol, which I have learned to recognize as the symbol of Benzaiten, I am able to piece together the Kanji as one of the possible writings for "Benzaiten".

Vulpine Side Shrine 6/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #14 of Inariyama.

Three foxes watch over this Shrine. Sadly, one has already lost his tail.

There's also another deity enshrined ere, but sadly I can't completely decipher its name (?丸大神).

Vulpine Side Shrine 7/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #15 of Inariyama.

Three unenshrined Kami guarded by two foxes. This time around, there is only one undecipherable Kanji - once again it appears to be to old to be listed in contemporary dictionaries.

For size reference: The coins that someone (not me) place atop the foxes heads are 10-Yen coins, about one inch in diameter.

Vulpine Side Shrine 8/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #16 of Inariyama.

A slightly more substantial Side Shrine with its own roof.

Despite being a dragon Shrine, there are still foxes watching over it. I guess they call that networking. Or maybe its part of a spiritual exchange programme?

Vulpine Side Shrine 10/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #18 of Inariyama.

This is one of the two Shrines located at the very westernmost end of the first Koumugen. The bamboo trees for a fantastic backdrop against the unenshrined Kami.

Also, for once I can read all of the names on the stones instead of only one or two.

The other of the two Shrines located at the very westernmost end of the first Koumugen. Four foxes watch over this draconic Shrine.

Once again, I am unable to decipher al lthe weathered Kanji. However, there is something noteworthy about those that I can decipher: Namely, the Kanji for Waterfall is equal to the Kanji for Dragon, plus the Water-Radical. This  even works in both the simple and the complex forms!

龍 + 氵 = 瀧

Vulpine Side Shrine 13/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #21 of Inariyama.

This one is the last vulpine Shrine of the western segment of Kuhouboutaki.

Apparently, they only had a budget for 9 different Kanji for this Shrine, and still managed to stretch it over 5 different Ookami.

Vulpine Side Shrine 14/56 of Kuhouboutaki, and Vulpine Shrine #22 of Inariyama.

This is the first Vulpine Shrine of the central segment of Kuhouboutaki, this one featuring a pair of really mossy old foxes guarding a really mossy old Ookami that is inscribed in a really old font. Fortunately, the little red torii repeats the name in a more legible style.

I am already overwhelmed with the sheer vulpine presence here and in the middle of a proper fox-gasm, and yet it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
