A Side Shrine of Kego Jinja (警固神社 "Hard Admonishment Shrine") right in the centre of Fukuoka, in the Tenjin (天神 "Heavenly God") district.

This one is distinctive for its multitude of vastly different Torii, and also features quite the selection of more homogeneous foxies. The dark ceramic foxes on the outside meanwhile are one of a kind thus far.

One of nine vulpine Side Shrines of Kurose Jinja (黒瀬神社 "Black Shallows Shrine"), which only narrowly escapes being named one of the Golden Fox Shrines due to not featuring any foxes itself. Instead, I am going to give Kurose Jinja the complimentary honour of being named a Silver Fox Shrine.

While not an Inari Shrine, this little Side Shrine is still "officially" connected with foxes, as both white Snakes and Foxes are being seen as protectors of the harvests, and as such can often be seen as guardians of Uka Shrines.

The second of the nine vulpine Side Shrines of Kurose Jinja (黒瀬神社 "Black Shallows Shrine").

Two pairs of little foxes, one white, one gold, are hiding behind the laurel branch at this tiny Side Shrine.

By the way, do you see the area immediately to the north of these Shrines? All of that is reclaimed land that was gradually stolen from the sea  over the course of three centuries. Back in 1732, Kurose Jinja was located right at the shore of a shallow coastline, thus explaining its name.

The third of the nine vulpine Side Shrines of Kurose Jinja (黒瀬神社 "Black Shallows Shrine").

Once again, the apparently local tradition of this Shrine to pair a pair of golden foxes with a pair of white ones continues.

Also, it deserves to be noted that maybe due to the close proximity to the sea, the, Torii at this and some of the other Side Shrines are not made of wood (nor stone) but rather metal.

The fourth of the nine vulpine Side Shrines of Kurose Jinja (黒瀬神社 "Black Shallows Shrine").

The name of this little Side Shrine is already old and worn, and I have some  difficulty deciphering it. However, I am now reasonably certain that I've got it right.

In contrast to the last, all-golden Side Shrine, this one houses four pairs of white foxies.

The eight of the nine vulpine Side Shrines of Kurose Jinja (黒瀬神社 "Black Shallows Shrine"), and definitely the smallest one.

Befittingly, this one is located perpendicular to Tsukimaru Jinja, and naturally it also houses an array of golden and white foxies next to the divine mirror.

The last of the nine vulpine Side Shrines of Kurose Jinja (黒瀬神社 "Black Shallows Shrine").

This Shrine enshrines a total of three Kami, which is not an uncommon practice in Japan. In  fact, I can recall seeing singulary Shrines enshrining up to seven Kami, and there might have been some with up to nine (though I'm not too sure about that).

Either way, the foxes in here are all white, also the paint seems to have faded from the middle pair, leaving them in their natural brown color.

The fifth Golden Fox Shrine I should visit during my stay in Japan.

This one is located squat atop of Nishikouen, just up a slope from Kurose Jinja actually.

The main Shrine is already quite foxy, but its true vulpinity lies in the stupendous amount of vulpine Side Shrines around here.

If you don't want me to list each of the many many many vulpine Side Shrines of Magatarou Inaka Jinja individually, let me know. Otherwise, the remainder of this Month will pretty much be filled with posts about those. =^,^=

The first of many vulpine Side Shrines of Magatarou Inaka Jinja. This one is located to the right and behind the main Shrine.

Incidentally, this place currently seems to be undergoing repairs from damages caused by a more or less recent natural disaster, as such some of the Side Shrines are in bad condition or outright demolished, and I should have to step around the diligent people working hard to get this place back in shape again.

The fourth of many vulpine Side Shrines of Magatarou Inaka Jinja, located directly next to the above one.

This one features the unusual odd number of foxes: Three of them, each in a different size.

By the way, here is how the foxes come to these Shrines: They are effectively tokens of prayer, and are on sale at certain Shrine offices. Then, people can put them in front of a shrine of their choosing, and it doesn't even  have to be an Inari Shrine. Since the foxes are usually sold as a pair of one female (the left one) and one male (the right one), they are usually placed at a Shrine together. The foxes also come in numbered sizes, with "1" being the smallest. I'm not perfectly sure, but estimating, I'd say the ones at this Shrine are sizes 1, 3 and 8.
