The  southernmost vulpine Inari Shrine I should find so far and until further notice.

This one is a Side Shrine of Ryouchuji (良疇寺 "Good Companion Temple"), which prominently features a giant Kannon statue that can be seen all the way from across the lake.

Also, the name plaque above this Shrine is written in some sort of ancient script that does not even bear resemblance to modern day Kanji - except for being fiendishly complex.

A semi-public Inari Shrine. This one is located in he back-driveway of a company, but the gates are wide open, and the row of red Torii was simply to inviting for me to pass up.

No one got upset about me just walking in there, and as a reward for my daring bravery, I found two little foxies watching over this Shrine.

A little Side Shrine of a Buddhist temple.

This one is a little bit unusual, featuring an unequal number of foxes on the left and right side. Usually, there is one lefty fox for every rightie, at least in Shrines with a countable number of foxies such as this one.

While  this one is located right next to Shingyouji (真行寺 "True Journey Temple"), it is a proper little Shrine of its own that is unrelated to the neighbouring Temple.

Two caged foxes watch over this Shrine. One of them is fearless, whilst the other is earless.

The final Shrine with Foxes that I should find in Nagahama.

This one is located on a rooftop. At first, I didn't think I would  manage to get there, but it is actually publicly accessible by means of the elevated walkways in front of the Nagahama Station and a number of stairs leading across a café. I also get a great view of the mountains around the city from there. A fitting finale.

The first vulpine Shrine I should find during my stay in Daisen (大山 "Great Mountain"), and with it the Chugoku region of Japan, which happens to be the westernmost region on Honshu.

I come across this one on what  should become known as the Odyssey Ride, an ambitious 111km bicycle ride across Nakaumi (中海 "Middle Sea"), all the way to Matsue (松江 "Pine Tree Creek") and back again. It should not go off without a hitch. Specifically, this one is located in Yonago (米子 "Rice Child"), which is the next town over, not far at all from the shore of Miho Irie (美保湾 "Beautiful Protection Bay").

It is actually pure chance that I find this Shrine. Originally, I had not even planned my route to pass near there, but fed up by the many traffic lights along the main road, I eventually decide to take to the side roads... and run right into this one, once again proving that I can obviously not walk (or bike) through a town without running into fox Shrines.

The second vulpine Shrine I should find during the Odyssey Ride of Daisen, located at the western terminus of my epic journey, in Matsue, and more specifically the castle grounds of the old Matsue Castle.

More notably, however, this is the fourth Golden Fox Shrine I should encounter during my time in Japan, and right on the schedule of one Golden Fox Shrine in about 50 normal fox Shrines too!

Not only does this one have more foxes left and right on the path to the Shrine than I can fit into one post, but it also features unlimited foxes on the sides and back - and that's not even accounting for the many vulpine Side Shrines. You can view a video of it here:

The first of four vulpine Side Shrines of Jouzan Inari Jinja, standing just at the left end of the row of unlimited foxes.

This one already makes a good start with... oh let's just call it "many" foxes.

The second of four vulpine Side Shrines of Jouzan Inari Jinja, standing left behind the main shrine, and just in the middle of the row of unlimited foxes.

This is one of the rare Shrines where foxes and dogs can be seen standing guard side by side - normally it's either one or the other. However, the foxes outnumber the dogs by quite a generous amount indeed.

The third of four vulpine Side Shrines of Jouzan Inari Jinja, standing to the right of the main shrine, and at the right end of the row of unlimited foxes.

This one is another rarity: It's not an Inari Shrine, and yet it is attended by 28 little foxies arranged in three rows. They must have come over from the other nearby Shrines.

The last of four vulpine Side Shrines of Jouzan Inari Jinja, standing right next to the previous one.

This one is an example of the concept of "Shrine Sharing", where multiple deities are venerated at the same Shrine. It shouldn't be the last of its kind that I would encounter, with some of them serving up to seven deities at once.

Also, the number of foxes here has once again increased to "many".

A Side Shrine of Matsue Jinja (松江神社 "Pine Creek Shrine"), standing right across from the Matsue Castle on the rise of the castle grounds. This should also be the westernmost vulpine Shrine I would visit on Honshu thus far, and quite possibly ever, given that I intend to travel to Kyushu and Okinawa next, and return via Shikoku.

Anyway, there are two foxes watching over this Shrine, both of which are already quite weathered veterans.

A regular-size Inari Shrine not far from the banks of Oohashigawa (大橋川 "Large Bridge River"), which connects Shinjiko (宍道湖 "Meat Road Lake") to the west with Nakaumi to the east.

At first, it doesn't look like any foxes are in attendance, but then I spot a quartet of them deep within.

This one is a Side Shrine of Mefu Jinja (賣布神社 "Sell Cloth Shrine"), which is located just across Oohashigawa.

Well, technically, it's not even a proper Shrine, and yet it has a fox watching over it. This is an instance of a sacred tree, the likes of which are not  uncommon to see at Shrines such as these. This tree in particular has probably  witnessed the rise of the city all around it. May it stand for a long time yet to come.

Eventually, my bike should end up getting a flat tire on the Odyssey Ride, but that should not stop me from seeking out further Inari Shrines.

This one is located on a hill not far from the convergence point of several rivers before they cross the lowest point in the mountain barrier separating Shinjiko from Nakaumi, resulting in quite a remarkable "reverse delta" landform.
