Title: Elements & Cliques
Post by: AdamLeisemann on Aug 18 2008, 06:11 PM
Just as a silly question to get some thinking going on, I figured I'd raise a hypothetical queastion.

Let us assume for the sake of this hypothetical that there was a school for kitsune, akin to a college or an American High School where there is a chance to socialize between classes and during lunch hour among fellow kitsune. Naturally, in any academic system that allows for a social life during school hours, there will be a tendancy towards cliques. Among kitsune, these cliques may be based on element.

Here are som examples of Cliques in the real world, for the benefit of anyone who might have been educated in a more strict academic environment, along with breif descriptions to indicate the stereotype of said clique (said stereotypes are not my opinion, merely commonly held beleifs). This comes from the game supplement "Teen Champions" and does not include the full text for copyright reasons.

Alternateens -- Into non-mainstream types of music (unlike the band geek, who is just into music in general) and feels superior to other students in terms of maturity.

Burnouts -- Favorite number is 420, poor academic performance, and having a tendancy towards delinquency. Oh, and if it can be smoked, the burnout has likely smoked it.

Cheerleaders -- Wanted by all the guys, but only interested in the jocks. Tendancy towards being ditzy. Seems to exist solely for the folks at sporting events wanting something to illicitly fantasize over. Also, usually perky and sporting a smile at nearly all times.

Geeks -- Smart, but socially inept. Usually dedicated to hobbies like video games or science fiction literature. If they aren't in the classroom, the jock has likely stuffed them into their lockers instead. Also usually inept at sports.

Jocks -- Sports, sports, and sports. That's pretty much it for these folks. Aside from "princes" and "princesses," these folks are practically royalty for the school as sports are, for some reason, seen as more important than academics and enrichment.

Loners -- Intentionally isolating themselves and others, loners often have a lot of speculation about them, but don't like talking to people. Often a new kid, or just perhaps a little awkward, yet many folks seem to think they are cool.

Princes/Princesses -- Rich, popular, attractive, and practically a modern day Tamamo-No-Mae in terms of the ability to manipulate others to their whims. In school, she will rule the roost of the students, and her fellow princesses are often regarded as handmaidens, and woe betide you if you get on her bad side.

Weirdos -- Like the loner, but the vibe they give is not so much "cool" as "creepy." Refuses to be a conformist, instead seeking to strike out on their own. They often seem to have weird hobbies and interests (like collecting freshly dug up bones because bones are cool).

And no, this is not a complete list but only a collection of samples.

So the question is this: What would cliques of kitsune elements likely coincisde with for human cliques? Remember to base this off the stereotypes of the elements (as far as you know) and the stereotypes of the cliques (again, as far as you know).

If you have a prominent kitsune character, you can also add in what clique you think that character would best fit into.

Thank you for your time.

comparing cliches to elements? hmm maybe it would help some if there was a personality stereotype in there first

(not necessarily correct but i'm still using it as an example)
fire --> temperamental, strong, outgoing --> jocks

Admittedly, I figured you folks would better know the kitsune elemental stereotypes.

indeed but sometimes its easier if its laid out in front of you, then there are differing takes on the stereotypes aka i might say a light element would be a quite, optimistic type where as somebody else might think of a light type as an over happy almost ditzy personality

it gets too confusing

Below is the list of kitsune stereotypes available to me, Coutesy of Kitsune Information.htm (I was given the page a while ago, and I saved it.)

Wind - Flighty, these kitsune are wanderers, never staying in one place for long.

Earth - Solid and unyielding, these kitsune are rooted in history, and resistant to change.

Fire - Quick-tempered and reactionary, Fire kitsune are constantly moving, and very emotional.

River - Natural healers, these kitsune are quiet and peaceful.

Ocean - Furious and tempestous, these kitsune are natural warriors.

Time - Contemplative and quiet. These kitsune are seers, being oracles.

Void - Dark and brooding, these kitsune are more malicious and very protective of their domains. Another source (I don't remember the page) says that Voidlings are either Evil, Insane, or inevitably prone to bouts of depression.

Mountain - Distant, these kitsune are withdrawn, silent, and prefer to observe before acting.

Forest - Quiet and serene, these kitsune watch those around them. Once satisfied with what they see, they become playful and mischevious.

Music - Pleasant and polite, these kitsune enjoy company and experiences.

Thunder - These kitsune are loud and arrogant, filled with pride. Some folks also liken this element to being highly fond of technology in more modern or futuristic times.

Celestial - Protective and noble, these kitsune believe they must guard all under their domain.

Also note that these are stereotypes and may not apply to all kitsune of these elements.

i'd say celestial would probably be Princes/Princesses,
and Void kitsune would probably end up as Loners or Goths

Anyways I dunno because I myself am a variety of different types, being part wind, celestial, forest, and river.

It seems safe to assume Music Kitsune are either Band Geeks or Alternateens.

We also have a vote for Fire as Jocks, Celestials as Princes/Princesses, and Voids as Loners, Goths and Weirdos (with an Emo-segment for the ones that are simply depressed instead of evil or insane).

It might make sense to have Wind kitsune as Cheerleaders, as both groups are (stereotypically) notably flighty and peppy. And of course, rival cheerleaders can then use gusts of wind to embarrass each other by blowing the skirts up and giving pantyshots all-around (which makes sense in the kitsune mindset, being the pranksters they tend to be).

i always thought of wind kitsune as the kind that are never wholly there, sort of like the dreamers, mellow, always wishing they were somewhere else, constantly on the move, sort of like the wind itself (i'm not really quite sure what element i belong to myself but probably a mix of wind type and some other)

Possibly. Like I have roughly addressed, I'm not an expert.

Maybe. Though once on Furcadia, as a joke retaliation to seeing Kitsune elements like "Sex" and "Acid", I did create a parodic "Technology" Kitsune who was in essence a big geek, with the story that she was actually born Celestial, but saw the ways of Celestials to be boring and stuffy (and it didn't help that her celestial peers were somewhat arrogant) and she chose to abandon that way and establish a 14th element; Technology, based on the notion of innovation. (Arguably, a Techsune's feeding might serve to explain why all Megaman (as the most egregious case), Zelda, and Pokemon games are essentially identical to each other.)

But yeah, Without them, Thunder would be the geeks.

Eh, that sounds a bit like me, I do tend to be a dreamer, having my mind somewhere else... actually I do that a lot, especially when I'm bored.
