It's just as I've been saying at other places, there's just no way something like this will come to pass. It completely violates the very freedom that the country stands for. Plus, Obama, at one point, outright said that he'd veto it.

politics isn't quite my cup of tea but...everyone in support of this is a sheep that should wake up, and realize that they're helping out in the erection of a draconian internet censorship machine that will bring not only an end to online piracy, but the end of user-generated content, derivative works, who knows whatelse, and ultimately the end of the internet as we know it.
i'm all in to keeping online piracy at bay and don't condone it, but this bill and PIPA alongside it is too extreme. the concequences far outweigh any possible benefit they'll have.

so to hell with these bills. if i ran some big entertainment company, i'd rather continue to cope with how things are now if stopping online piracy also means having to fuck everyone's freedom over.

So, apparently, some of the companies who previously supported SOPA have recently dropped their support. (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/30/nintendo-ea-and-sony-also-rescind-sopa-support/) It's nice to know that they're finally coming to their senses. In addition to Obama's claim that he would veto it, this makes that bill even less likely to pass.

I knew it wouldn't pass. I just couldn't see the U.S. OK'ing something that deprives people of the very freedom that the country strives for.

I knew it wouldn't pass. I just couldn't see the U.S. OK'ing something that deprives people of the very freedom that the country strives for.
and yet obama OK'd the military to indefinately detain civillians without trial or charge (NDAA) despite protest and wide opposition, but that's a different can of worms

anyways SOPA is still alive, they only shelved it for now and we won't be hearing of it till next month.
PIPA is being voted on next week, keep knocking sense into 'em, its just as big a threat alone, don't rest until both bills are left to burn in a fire

Isn't SOPA and PIPA being "postponed indefinitely" a good thing? Or am I misinterpreting something, here?

Recently, I've heard that there's another bill they're trying to pass, called "ACTA" (Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement), which is supposedly worse than both SOPA and PIPA. It's essentially the same, but the reason this one's considered worse, is because it's world-wide, and not just U.S. exclusive.

What Is ACTA ? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8Xg_C2YmG0#ws)

well great great grandmother of god...if the government is this hell-bent on destroying the internet for the sake of intellectual property and filling bloody hollywood's vaults, my fantasies of the internet collapsing into chaos are this close to becoming reality
