I just have to wonder what kind of hardware it is. It's way too early for it to be a completely new console or handheld, since the Wii U and 3DS only came out a couple years or so ago.

the DS launched on the GBA's 3rd year and was originally third pillar, then its popularity took off and proved itself as a worthy successor to the GBA

It's worth noting that video game console companies begin development on the next generation of hardware the moment the current generation launches.

These companies tend to plan on hardware creation years in advance.

Nintendo is far from intending to release a new console just yet, most likely.

When different patents show up from video game console companies, it's because they're experimenting with something.
