Possible Sonic CD downloadable content on the way.
« on: May 17 2012, 12:17 AM »
I'm sure that anyone who's purchased The Taxman's Sonic CD remake is aware of and has seen a mock-up screenshot of the missing "Desert Dazzle" stage (as well as another stage called "Final Fever"), which was originally meant to be added, but didn't make the cut. However, according to The Taxman, there's a chance that both stages may be finalized and made available as a downloadable content if there's enough demand for it. I'm almost certain that this also applies to Knuckles' inclusion in the game. I don't know about anyone else, but that's the one thing that truly disappointed me about the remake; why add Tails, but leave Knuckles out? That made absolutely no sense to me. Anyway, here are screenshots of the stages in question:

sega didn't want them the first time around because they wanted the remake to stay close to the original

these are what taxman's visions of what these lost levels would look like, he obviously did all/most of the graphics himself
DD is basically made of redone DHZ graphics and FF's flooring seems to take inspiration from sonic crackers' "carnival speedway" level

i'm all in for sonic CD&K, its not like sonic 2&K was supposed to be canon anyway

they're probably saving knux for sonic 4 ep3 which also will bring knuckles' chaotix back into the spotlight if trend repeats itself

Things seem to be looking up. Just recently, the maps for both Desert Dazzle and Final Fever were included in an update.

I highly doubt that those maps were added for no reason, so it's definitely a possibility that this is a sign of things to come. Plus, there's this screen to take into account, which clearly isn't the same mock-up image from the above post.

EDIT: Looks like we finally get to see the stage in action.

...the stages actually exist?!
They still look a little unpolished though. If they really were to show up in our games... I hope the Amazon version gets updated as well.

...wait a second. I want the mobile remasters for PC. Make it happen and stop doing goofy things like reviving awesome scrapped levels.

...calm down sir. Just stop for a moment.

Oh man, that was not meant to be in there!

What you're seeing is basically all that was playable (although the wonky palette cycling must be because you've hacked it in over Palmtree Panic). The level design isn't anywhere near done, it's only a test to see what structures look nice / what ideas are worth pursuing. Same goes with the music - it's only playing the D.A. Garden track because there's nothing else to use.

Had it been done, Desert Dazzle would have been full length Round with time zones and new music. I'm quite fond of the art I made for it actually, it was somewhat of a happy accident coming up with those patterns and colours.

Yeah, I noticed that post just a little while ago. I was about to quote that myself, but you beat me to it. Still, it was definitely a pleasant surprise to see those stage assets get added. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to see Desert Dazzle in action.

Also, as overrated as I consider the Japanese/European track to be, the Time Attack theme is surprisingly fitting, even if its sole reason for playing is because of all the other stage songs being taken.
