sonic 1 and 2 getting removed from wii shop channel again:
http://gonintendo.com/stories/245701-sonic-the-hedgehog-virtual-console-games-being-pulled-from-wii-es

i'm guessing they're
- either replacing the originals with the 3D and retro engine remasters
- a deal with nakamura expired and he's a douche when it comes to his sonic music, remembering the music issues with spinball
- it's an outdated shop that's only still around because of wii U's wii backcomp

The Taxman himself has confirmed (http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=29727&view=findpost&p=842039) that it doesn't have anything to do with his and Stealth's remastered ports, so this only leaves the possibility of legal issues regarding Nakamura's music, or the originals getting replaced with the (rather redundant) M2 ports.

EDIT: The post right below The Taxman's states that even the remastered games were removed from their respective downloadable services in Japan, so it definitely must be legal issues.

Post by: Mystical Ninja on Nov 04 2015, 05:44 AM
Well, what do you know? As it turns out, there were no legal issues involved, either, since even Nakamura has no idea why (http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=29727&view=findpost&p=842381) the games were removed.

whatever it is, the following appear to be not affected:
sonic 3
sonic & knuckles
sonic 3D blast
sonic spinball
dr. robotnik's mean bean machine
sonic 1 MS
sonic 2 MS
sonic chaos MS

i'm surprised the super star wars trilogy and anything of lucasarts are still on there after the disney acquisition, assuming the wikipedia list is up to date

so according to SoJ's sonic technical files:
- sonic was an emblem on some flight jacket that somehow came to life
- the genesis trilogy games are all adaptations of stories by a fictional 40's children's book author

I was gonna post that earlier, but you beat me to it.

In any case, I certainly hope the twenty-fifth anniversary game will be better than the twentieth. Not that Generations was an outright terrible game or anything, but at the same time, I still find it to be extremely overrated, and was nowhere near what it was hyped up to be. As such, I'll be keeping my expectations pretty low this time around. Or at least I'll try to...

There's also a new game announcement tomorrow, which they claim is geared toward the Classic Sonic fanbase.

https://www.facebook.com/Sega/posts/10153880337946796

There's much speculation going on that this is going to be a revival of the supposedly cancelled third episode of Sonic 4.
Title: Re: sega to try bringing sonic back to roots yet again
Post by: Yerix on Jan 20 2016, 11:40 PM
facebook links say "the content isn't available right now"

how do we know this won't be for another endless runner or a rerelease?
this announcement sounds like it'll be a minor one compared to what they're probably saving for the february announcement
Title: Re: sega to try bringing sonic back to roots yet again
Post by: Mystical Ninja on Jan 21 2016, 12:14 PM
The speculation came from the fact that the first two episodes were re-added to the mobile phone stores after getting removed (for whatever reason) at some point, along with the fact that the first trailer for Episode 1 was shown around this time six years ago, but I digress. As it turns out, the announcement that was meant to cater to the classic fanbase is none other than...

funny how they picked fukkoku archives 2 over the first to bring stateside because sonic isn't in the first compilation for sega to whore off

i don't see why we can't have the double pack so that we can have both and they still could whore sonic

i don't remember GHZ having barber pole pillar things (one even has green around it, as if pulled it from a spritesheet) and bumpers
they didn't even use the original cloud gfx

sega's so daft they forgot what 16-bit GHZ looked like

funny thing is this is sega's main depiction of GHZ, the generations rendition, and this 16-bit rendition of it with these barber pole pillars that didn't exist in the original

unlike sonic 4...ahem mania this is confirmed bound for a nintendo platform, specifically the NX
Title: Re: sega to try bringing sonic back to roots yet again
Post by: Mystical Ninja on Jul 23 2016, 03:09 AM
Great, more Classic Sonic fanboy pandering. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it may still be a fun game and all, but that trailer largely hinted at this being another "Sonic only" title, with all the others, once again, being brushed aside and treated as if they're insignificant. Sure, Tails and Knuckles are playable in Sonic Mania, which is a plus, but why can't that be the case in the "main" Sonic Team-developed titles anymore?
Title: Re: sega to try bringing sonic back to roots yet again
Post by: Yerix on Jul 23 2016, 10:29 PM
all signs to this near decade-long "solo sonic" trend lead to sonic '06, that's the last main sonic team project to have other playables that are not sonic (or a reskin/form/variant)

when that crashed and burned, i guess sonic team looked at their sonic adventure formula of a whole roster of characters going at their own variants of levels and said "fuck it"
(but honestly the reason why sonic '06 is a huge bunghole is because of internal strife and being xmas rushed)

and people ask why "sonic adventure 3" still isn't a thing when sonic '06 effectively killed that formula

i'd say solo sonic started after SRA, but blaze hardly controls any different from sonic

did we really need another GHZ reskin, this is just it with sand

this music is ear murder, you can't just slap sonic 1/2 percussion samples to the sound of a YM2612 (or at least a close emulation) getting sodomized in a sex dungeon and call it classic sonic music
Title: Re: sega to try bringing sonic back to roots yet again
Post by: Mystical Ninja on Apr 25 2017, 10:47 PM
I personally didn't think the music was all that bad, but I digress.

At first, I had very little interest in this game, since it seemed to be little more than a straight rehash of Generations (which, as I've said in the past, is pretty overrated), where they're once again milking the Unleashed daytime engine, making Sonic the only playable character, and treating other characters as if they're insignificant just to please all the idiots who use Sonic's so-called "shitty friends" as a scapegoat for the past games supposedly being "terrible". Since there's actually a third playable character (which isn't Sonic for a change), that does throw that trend out the window just a tad.

However, I'm pretty mixed on the third character, mostly because I just don't understand Sonic Team's logic at all. They've avoided making other characters (including Tails and Knuckles, even) playable in almost every game in the past ten years out of fear of backlash from the purists and fanboys, and then when they actually do decide to go through with it again, they create a new character (which is most likely why they got said backlash in the first place) instead of using one of the established characters that they've been neglecting for so long. You'd think they would have done that first before adding a new character into the picture, but whatever.

Overall, I guess you can say that I'm mixed about the whole game in general. Even now, I'm still far more interested in Mania than I am in Forces.

Here it is, the long-awaited reveal of the third playable "character":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw17cTl_6Wk

I'm... I'm not sure what to think of this, to be honest. If I do decide to get this game when it comes out, I probably won't have any use for this feature.

imagine all the OCDNS that'll come out of that

also remember there was almost a contest that would've decided sonic's sidekick for a game, so sega has explored the idea before

I saw Shadow, Metal Sonic, Chaos, and Zavok, but I didn't see Blaze among them. Now that you mention it, though... The new character they showed after the fact, which is apparently controlling them, does look similar to a prototype design (http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/File:Protoblaze_solo_watermarked.png) of Blaze's. I wouldn't be surprise if they took inspiration from that, seeing as the Time Eater's design was clearly inspired by some old Sonic 1 concept art.

11 years since shadow's previous playable role in a mainstream modern sonic - broken
10 years since a not-sonic has been playable in a mainstream modern sonic - broken by non-hedgehog CACs
10 years since any non-hedgehog character has been playable in a mainstream modern sonic - broken by non-hedgehog CACs

sega's finally breaking the "solo sonica" trend, and should they go full swing with giving others of the sonic cast their own story modes, they can finally put it to pasture for good

for one, tails needs to throw away that oversized gameboy and actually be worth a shit again
and unless the game is "tails adventures 2" sega should lay off giving him any more gadgetry other than the remote robot and tornado

actually i'd appreciate a tails adventures 2 one of these days
