I have to say, I'm not all that impressed with the direction this game's going in so far. To me, it looks as if this game is pulling a Donkey Kong Country Returns. By that, I mean that it's proclaiming itself as a welcome-back return to the original formula, and yet it's excluding several things that made the first two games so great in the first place. For starters, there doesn't seem to be any partners (other than Kersti, or whatever her name is), there are no experience points for winning battles, etc.

I'm also not very impressed with the storyline, or the fact that Bowser's the main villain. There have been several villains throughout the past RPGs (including Super Paper Mario) that have proven themselves to be far more sinister, evil, and generally more competent villains than Bowser could ever hope to be. I'm not saying that I hate Bowser, but at the same time, but at the same time, I do think he's overrated (as a villain). In my opinion, he's much better at being an anti-hero, but maybe that's just me.

So, the game's been released the other day. I haven't played the game myself, but I have been watching some Sticker Star footage on Youtube lately, including that of the final boss, and I have to say that this game turned out to be a major disappointment. In fact, I'm so disappointed in it (along with all the New Super Mario Bros. rehashes) that I'm about this close to just giving up on the series entirely. I've tried to be as open-minded about this game as I possibly could, but the more things I learned about it, and the more video footage I saw, I found myself getting less and less excited about it.

This game, in my opinion, is an absolute slap in the face, due to the fact that they went out of their way to remove so many things that made the series so great in the first place (after they had originally presented the game as a welcome-back return to the original formula). It's like they've completely forgotten what this series is all about, and this is coming from someone who thoroughly enjoyed Super Paper Mario (and has beaten it several times).  Sticker Star doesn't even have half the charm that the first three Paper Mario games had.

Quote
The Paper Mario series started when we introduced RPG elements as a means of differentiating the game from the platformer series. Through the inclusion of this story and the characters we wrote to fit that story, we ended up giving the game a unique character. However, for Sticker Star, Mr Miyamoto asked us to create a game using only characters already found in the Mario world rather and not any of our own. So instead of focusing our attention on the story or characters we focused instead on paper.
There you have it. This explains everything, actually. Earlier screenshots like this one clearly indicated that they were indeed planning on returning to the original formula, and yet, for some stupid reason, Miyamoto thought it was a good idea to just take everything that the previous games established (partners, original enemy species, deep, story-driven plots, etc.) and just throw it out the window. It's already bad enough that the platformers are doing this, but now this is happening to the RPGs, too? Yeah, that about does it for me. I think I'm officially done with the series. Although, I do still have some hope for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. That seems like the series' only saving grace at this point, unless that game is also going to end up getting stripped of its creativity and freedom like all the other Mario games as of late.

my only gripes are:
- every NPC is a male toad of various colors. PM debuted the idea of female toads in a mario game, MK-DD debuted toadette who isn't an off-brand paperverse character, what stopped them from a little gender diversity?
- the traditional hammer action command changed to that you'd have to watch a sparkle on the hammer and press A, the timing for an "excellent" hammer attack is mere milliseconds apart, so i end up getting less excellent hammer attacks, while i get excellent jump attacks all the time as that's been the same since SMRPG
- luigi is an insignificant background easter egg
- can't use mushroom stickers to heal outside of battle

so when they try keeping things the same, they get panned...
and when they try something new, they get panned...

aside from these flaws, the game is fine to me, its a "love it-hate it" type. in fact i'm about halfway in
people are turned off obviously because alot of the features of its predecessors are missing, but they at least can give it a rent

i'd like to see a "paper wario" happen

Here's an Iwata Asks interview regarding the game, which reveals even more information of Miyamoto's desecration of the series.

Quote
After E3, Miyamoto-san played the prototype [of Sticker Star] and said it was just a port of the GC version.

Quote
Aside from wanting us to change the atmosphere a lot, there were two main things that Miyamoto-san said from the start of the project—"It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?" and "As much as possible, complete it with only characters from the Super Mario world.

Quote
Yeah. With regard to the story, we did a survey over the Super Paper Mario  game in Club Nintendo, and not even 1% said the story was interesting.
Isn't that just lovely? Ugh... I'd be ranting about this right now, but it'd basically be a repeat of what I already said, about this game being such a kick in the nuts and everything. Do you know what the saddest part about this whole thing is, though? The sales of this game are most likely going to be off the charts, and as such, they're going to continue churning out garbage like this, and possibly ruin the series even further.

miyamoto is supposedly stepping down from his current position in december, or so i've heard

but they didn't have to follow his words, this wasn't a problem with the prior 3 installments

i'd understand if the choices made with PM-SS were made in order to avoid the "stale rehash syndrome" that pretty much claimed the NSMB subseries, but TTYD came out 8 years ago

so instead PM-SS got "watered-down sequel syndrome" and almost all of nintendo's properties have one or more suffering games
