Title: Sonic Generations
Post by: Mystical Ninja on Oct 09 2010, 10:02 PM
According to this (http://www.tssznews.com/2010/10/09/bulletin-sega-confirms-sonic-anniversary-3rd-mario-and-sonic-for-2011/) link, there's a third Mario and Sonic crossover title that's in development, as well as the twentieth anniversary Sonic game (http://www.tssznews.com/2010/10/09/sonic-anniversary-to-be-modern-adaptation-of-best-classic-levels/). The Mario & Sonic title, I honestly couldn't care less about, considering how mediocre the other two were. At this point, they're just milking it. The 20th Anniversary game, on the other hand, seems pretty interesting. According to the link, it's going to contain modern adaptions of classic stages. My guess is that it's going to be similar to the way the Green Hill Zone was handled in Sonic Adventure 2. I just hope they'll include more than just the first act this time.

The idea sounds awesome, but I think it will be more like colors(as in using the colors/unleashed engine), old levels will be all 2d and the dc era and up will be 3d.

Some new renders have been leaked on the Sonic Channel website. Perhaps they have something to do with the 20th Anniversary game?

don't remember that in previous renders

Actually, they look more like scuffs. It would make sense, both characters do a lot of running and they are very high quailty versions of the characters. They can afford little details like that.

New Sonic Game- Sonic 'Generations' Trailer (pending title) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6l6-JpmenhQ#ws)

-title is supposedly going to be "sonic generations"
-present era sonic meets genesis era sonic, and is the first real use of the original design in ages
-PS3/360 downloadable game (fffffffffffffffffff)

It has indeed been ages since the classic Sonic design was used. Up until now, it hasn't been used since 1997, which was exactly fourteen years ago. I'm glad they finally decided to bring that design back. I wonder if this also means that classic Robotnik will return, as well? I don't understand why they couldn't do that in Sonic 4. I'm not saying the game sucks because of that, I'm just saying that it would have been a nice feature to have.

As long as Sonic Generations has gameplay similar to Sonic Colors I will be happy. If it has physics similar to the classic games then I will be in heaven.

as we know, sega planned 3 titles for sonic's 20th, and we currently know of 2

1. sonic generations
2. nameless mario & sonic crossover

the third can either be sonic 3DS, sonic 4 ep2 or something else entirely
Title: Re: Leaked info about new Sonic games on the horizon.
Post by: Mystical Ninja on Apr 07 2011, 05:26 PM
I'm not expecting anything good to come out of the Mario and Sonic crossover. At all.

As for the third game, it's definitely Sonic 4: Episode 2. It was confirmed last month (or was it late February?) that the game is currently in development.

Sonic Generations' gameplay looks absolutely amazing. I'm very impressed with what I'm seeing so far. It looks to me as if they're truly going above and beyond with this game.

As for the new Mario and Sonic game, I knew it was going to be another one of those stupid Olympic titles. That's exactly why I wasn't expecting anything good to come out of it.

Here's a translation of the Spanish subtitles in the video, done by DKSpartacus, from the Donkey Kong Universe forum (http://dkvine.com/interactive/forums).

Quote
"This year, Sonic turns 20. The concept of Sonic Generations was essentially to compress all 20 years of his history into a single game. For example, what we did to adapt the traditional Sonic, with all of his traditional 2-D platforming and his signature charateristics, to fit with the modern Sonic, with his own unique characteristics. In my opinion, there both are fans that prefer classic 2-D Sonic platform-action games, and fans that prefer the 3-D Sonic games as of late." [Editor's Note: But not in my opinion. While there are plenty aspects that I and many other people I've spoken to like better about the 3-D series, like its characters and graphics, I've never met anybody who thinks the 3-D gameplay was superior. But moving on...]

"In 2010, we released Sonic 4: Episode I, which was intended mostly for classic Sonic fans, [Editor's Note: I forgot classic Sonic games were filled with shitty physics!] but also Sonic Colors, which was for the fans that enjoy Sonic in 3-D. What we wanted to do with Sonic Generations was to create a game that's intended to please both fanbases. We hope that the whole world is pleased with this unique game, and can celebrate Sonic's 20th Anniversary together."

"We designed the game to be an authentic look back upon 20 years of Sonic. So it tends to shy away from a lot of the more defined elements of both versions in favor of a more generalized view of the last 20 years as a whole. [Editor's Note: This bit is an approximation. I didn't know exactly what they were saying here, and nor, really, did Babelfish--and this is the first I've used it to translate a sentence in this interview--but that seems to be gist of his statement. Also stay tuned for more on this bit.*] Today we gave a demonstration of Green Hill Zone, the first level in the whole franchise, and throughout the year we will announce other levels until we reveal them all. We aren't just going with all old stuff and all new stuff, we want to include both. Today we announced that you only can play as the two versions of Sonic, but many other characters from the Sonic universe will make an appearance. We're talking about the friends of Sonic; Tails, Knuckles, Shadow [Editor's Note: Damn!] , etc, that form a part of his history, and they're an important part of the game."

"We've still got a lot more surprises to reveal, for now suffice to say that the point is to make a fun action game along the lines of the classic formula, but with both the classic and modern Sonics. Not so much to either collaborate or compete, but to create a pure action game for gamers in general."
It sounds interesting so far. Apparently, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow are in the game, but aren't playable. How disappointing. Don't get me wrong, though; I still think this game looks amazing, and I have every intention of buying it when it comes out, but at the same time, I'm kind of sick of Sonic being the only playable character nowadays.

Yeah, so I've heard. There's also a rumored PC version in the making, meaning that we'll be (possibly) seeing some mods, like all the various Sonic Adventure DX hacks out there. Also, Cream the Rabbit is in the game. (http://www.sonicstadium.org/2011/05/sonic-generations-3ds-pc-listings-removed-cream-the-rabbit-teased/) Now, I just need to know whether or not characters like Mighty, Ray, Nack/Fang, etc. are going to be in the game. Honestly, if they get left out (again), I'm going to be pissed. In addition to (needlessly) getting peoples' hopes up with that obscure character poll, Iizuka said that Generations was going to cover all twenty years of Sonic, so there's absolutely no reason for them to not show up.

Sonic Generations - E3 2011 Trailer (City Escape) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe7GQ91VPNU#ws)
I'm really liking the Classic-style rendition of City Escape. Seeing that in the trailer really put a smile on my face. It was just handled so well. If stages like Crisis City and Kingdom Valley are truly in this game, then I'd love to see a Classic-style take those, as well.

Also:

Yes, you saw that right. Nack the Weasel/Fang the Sniper, Bean the Dynamite, and Bark the Polar Bear cameos! It's about time. I don't know whether or not they're going to make a physical appearance in the game, but this is good enough for now. At least they're actually being acknowledged this time around. Also, according to someone at Sonic Stadium, who watched Iizuka play Sonic Generations at E3, there are Mighty and Ray pictures, as well. Although, I can't imagine them being on "WANTED" posters, since they're not criminals. But still, this is a pleasant surprise, nonetheless.

*DOUBLEPOST*

Regarding Mighty and Ray in the above post? I just found out that the two of them are on "MISSING" posters. That makes a lot more sense than them being on "WANTED" posters like Nack, Bean, and Bark, because of the reason I listed above.

Anyway, here's some additional City Escape footage, for both Classic and Modern Sonic.

First, I'll start with Classic:

Now, Modern:

Someone finally took a screencap of the Mighty and Ray cameo:

(https://kitsuria.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi677.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv135%2Fxweek%2FMightyRayHiRes.png&hash=543585149ed63b64123730b357b41fc6ddc5144b)
Erroneously, it says that Mighty was last seen in 1993, when the last game he appeared in was Knuckles' Chaotix, which was released in 1995.
Title: Re: Sonic Generations
Post by: Yerix on Jun 11 2011, 02:28 AM
it's because they're being depicted as missing together, and the first, last and only game they've been seen together was in segasonic arcade. acknowledging his appearence in chaotix, they would have to give mighty his own missing poster.
generations has until november to release, so they have a long time to fix that if they choose to

also notice that those shots of mighty and ray on the poster are ripped graphics from the segasonic arcade title screen
(https://kitsuria.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Finfo.sonicretro.org%2Fimages%2F2%2F2c%2FSegaSonic_title.PNG&hash=7899d86cccbe58575c73c7146dd5e07cce57b6c2)
compare, its a perfect match. probably off a spritesheet or something. hell, they've been proven to download ROMs off the net for their compilation titles, since they supposedly lost the source code to the majority of their games from the saturn and before.

speaking of chaotix, i'd like to see a level with classic and modern sonic bound together via combi-ring. the level could be based off a chaotix level (or even crackers for fanservice's sake if they choose to).
the classic level would have classic at the front and modern in the back. modern level does the opposite.
if they're covering all 20 years of sonic, there'd be at least one chaotix level to consider. i'd see it most possible in the 3DS version, as both sonics are built for 2D there.
either way, it'd probably take a fuckton of effort to make it work in 2.5D though.

Yeah, the 3DS version is definitely looking pretty bland when compared to the console version(s). While the X-Box 360/Playstation 3 version(s) have new, interesting takes on the classic stages, the 3DS version seems to do nothing but rehash the exact same level layouts that people have gone through about a thousand times already. And having Sonic 4-style physics isn't exactly helping its case, either. So, I think I'll be steering clear of that one, and this is coming from someone who prefers the DS version of Sonic Colors to the Wii version.

In honor of Sonic's twentieth birthday, a Generations demo is going to be released tomorrow, on X-Box Live Arcade and Playstation Network. (http://forum.mariowiki.com//api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1081&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fz9.invisionfree.com%2FIHOW%2Findex.php%3Fshowtopic%3D1020%26st%3D30%26%23last&v=1&libid=1308785335819&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.destructoid.com%2Fsonic-generations-demo-sonic-bundle-arriving-tomorrow-204346.phtml&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fz9.invisionfree.com%2FIHOW&title=IHOC!%20Intergalactic%20House%20of%20Chewbacca!%20-%3E%2020th%20Annivesary%20Speculation%20Thread%23last&txt=the%20demo%20is%20going%20to%20include%20both) Apparently, it's going to feature one Classic stage and one Modern stage. I had a feeling that they'd do something like this, since they also released a Sonic Adventure 2 demo ten years ago, before the game was actually released.
Title: Re: Sonic Generations
Post by: Mystical Ninja on Jun 23 2011, 06:35 PM
Someone from the Donkey Kong Universe forum manage to copy the stage list from Sonic Retro (which is currently down for some reason), along with some of the items that are going to be included in the full game:

The Japanese writing at the bottom is a list of characters:

-Tails
-Knuckles
-Amy
-Cream
-Rouge
-Espio
-Charmy
-Vector
-Blaze

As for the stage list:

-Green Hill Zone
-Chemical Plant Zone
-Sky Sanctuary Zone
-Speed Highway
-City Escape
-Seaside Hill
-Crisis City
-Rooftop Run
-Planet Wisp

DLC

-Casino Night Zone

Boss fights

-Metal Sonic
-Shadow
-Silver

"Death Egg"

-Perfect Chaos
-Egg Dragoon
-Boss LastBoss(TimeEater) (That's just what the file calls it.)

What a disappointing level selection. What, did they just happen to randomly pull these stage names out of a hat? Next to none of the stages that I was actually looking forward to are actually going to be in this game. Iizuka claimed that Sonic Generations was going to cover all twenty years of Sonic, but as everyone can plainly see, it's not even close to that. Nothing from the Game Gear games, nothing from Knuckles' Chaotix, or even Sonic CD. The thing that's even more infuriating about the former, is that Iizuka outright made a mockery of it (http://www.sonicstadium.org/2011/06/e3-sonic-generations-qa-with-takashi-iizuka), laughing at the guy as soon as that idea was brought up.
Title: Re: Sonic Generations
Post by: Samui on Jun 24 2011, 12:05 PM
That's sad. I was hoping to see more Genesis-era levels in that list. Like maybe Lava Reef or Ice Cap. As for the Game Gear levels, I am also appalled that they aren't considering it. So much for 20 years of Sonic, right?

Anyway, I have played the 360 version of the demo. It's not too bad.
Title: Re: Sonic Generations

This came from Sonic Retro's main page:

Quote
[Edit: I spoke with representatives from Sega after this article was published--it's not surprising it caught their attention. While in conversation, it was revealed that some of the things we showed were in fact works in progress and not final products. As a result, we're pulling these things as we feel they are basically rumor. Since we had prior confirmation from another source on the level list, we're keeping it as accurate.
Oh, thank God. That's a relief. Had the above list of stages and bosses had been all that the full game had to offer, then I was going to be severely disappointed.

...Which brings us to the question as to why Sonic 2 Beta wasn't included in the collection.

Also, I couldn't help but notice Naka saying how relieved he was about Sonic X-Treme getting cancelled. Well, he ought to, considering the fact that he pretty much contributed to its downfall. I'm sure he must feel VERY proud of himself.

-I'm neutral about that one, since I've never played the first.
-Oh, God. No. Not another one. Wildfire/Secret Rings was pretty good, but Black Knight was just pushing it. After that game's low sales, I didn't think they'd make another.
-Tails is getting another game? Not bad, but what about Knuckles? A while back, Iizuka expressed interest in making a Chaotix sequel, but knowing him, I guess that's just not going to happen. It seems to me as if he was just needlessly getting peoples' hopes up, like always.
-Maybe it'll be an actual Rush sequel? Not just a "spiritual" one like Sonic Colors DS, I mean one that actually has Blaze as a playable character, along with the Sol Emeralds and Nega Robotnik being involved in the storyline.

i'd take a "chaotix 2" on the 3DS as long as dimps has no involvement. i also can accept a "tails adventures 2", it could play like mario 64/sunshine with a zelda-esque item interface...you'd still be changing them at tails' house though

I just saw that on Sonic Retro a few minutes ago. That's a pretty awesome-looking rendition of Chemical Plant, right there. I love how it gives off a Crisis City/Genocide City vibe. Well, at least that's how I still envision Genocide City, rather than the Metropolis Zone rip-off that it actually turned out to be.

Awesome.

About Classic Tails... I hope they bring back more classic designs, including those of the Chaotix, but they probably won't, since according to Iizuka, they're entirely different characters. What a load of crap. Going by that logic, that must mean that Modern Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Robotnik must be different characters from their classic counterparts, too. Is Iizuka TRYING to insult peoples' intelligence, or what?

So, Mushroom Hill is in it? Awesome. At first, I was worried that Sky Sanctuary would be the only stage from Sonic 3 & Knuckles to make it into the game. Not that I have a problem with that stage, but still.

What's with all the Werehog hate, exactly? I'll admit that it wasn't executed very properly in the Wii/Playstation 2 version, but it was exceptionally good in the X-Box 360/Playstation 3 version. The engine was better, the controls were a lot smoother, there were more combos to use, etc. Overall, that version of the Werehog gameplay was a much funner experience.

Yeah, it does look as if they're making progress, as far as the engine is concerned. Now, my only problem is that they're still rehashing the exact same level layouts, unlike the console version, which has new and interesting takes on those stages.

Quote
At the start of the game, everyone is attending a picnic in honour of Sonic's 20th, when all of a sudden a mysterious dark force intrudes and sends everyone, including our spiky blue protagonist, back in time. Sonic is finding a way to get himself and everyone else back to the present time and along the way he bumps into many familiar faces including his younger (albeit chubbier) self! The two Sonics team up and work together to save their friends once again.

-Classic (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/21/yclasssoserious.png/)
-Modern (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/ysoserious.png)

Strangely enough, Classic Super Sonic doesn't have green eyes like he did in Sonic 3. There's only one of two reasons I could think of as to why he doesn't. Number one, they wanted him to look more like he did in Sonic 2, or two, because the fanbase would complain about it. Or both. Either one is possible.

Speaking of Sonic CD re-release, it apparently is going to be on /all/ platforms except WiiWare. The reason for this exception is space limitations. They plan on having both soundtracks (US and JP) available.

The Japanese/European track is pretty good, but personally, I've always preferred the American one, since that's the one I grew up listening to. I was hoping that they'd finally find a way to include both soundtracks in the game, giving players an option to choose which one they'd like to hear throughout the game, but I guess not.

Title: Re: Sonic Generations

Don't worry, I still don't have the game yet myself. In my case, though, that's only because I'm low on cash at the moment. Perhaps I'll get this game as a birthday gift or maybe around Christmas, or something.

In other news, Tails has been confirmed playable in the Sonic CD remake. (http://www.sonicretro.org/2011/11/sonic-cd-a-time-paradox-of-a-two-tailed-fox/) For some reason, a few people over at Sonic Retro seem to be raging over his inclusion in the game. I honestly don't see what the problem is. It would be one thing if Modern Era characters like Shadow or Cream (I have nothing against either of them) were being added into the game, but Tails? Give me a break. He's been around since the Genesis Era, almost as long as Sonic and Robotnik.

I, for one, welcome Tails' presence in this game. While I would have preferred Knuckles, Tails is definitely the next best thing. Who knows? Maybe Knuckles will end up being in the game as downloadable content. After all, he was playable in the Retro Sonic fangame, and this remake is using the exact same engine. All I need to know now is whether or not they'll find some way around the legal issues involving the U.S. track, as well as whether or not they'll add Super Sonic into the game. Before anyone says anything, yes, I know that the Chaos Emeralds weren't in the game, but I do remember it being stated that collecting all seven Time Stones would enable the "S" monitors, which would replace the invincibility and speed shoes monitors, and enable Super Sonic.

Yeah, that's Apotos. There's no mistake about it.

it'd make sense that it is apotos, as levels between the 3DS (of what we know so far) and console versions all share an origin game.
as silver is also confirmed a rival boss in the 3DS version, we're yet to have an '06 level revealed for that version.

sonic 1
console:green hill
3DS:green hill

sonic 2
console:chemical plant
3DS:casino night

sonic 3/&K
console:sky sanctuary
3DS:mushroom hill

adventure
console:speed highway
3DS:emerald coast

adventure 2
console:city escape
3DS:radical highway

heroes
console:seaside hill
3DS:special stage

sonic '06
console:crisis city
3DS:?

unleashed
console:spagonia-rooftop run
3DS:apotos-windmill isle

colors
console:planet wisp
3DS:tropical resort

edit:forgot heroes

Sonic Generations: Green Hill Act 1 [3DS Version] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--gIgIh7v8s#)

better than before as usual...but why is modern robotnik on the sign? isn't it classic robotnik in the HD version?

Sonic's animations seem really off for some reason, I just can't put my finger on it. Anyways, I also bought the pc version and it is by far the best one! Being able to play it at 60 fps compared to the 30 on consoles feels much better.

i don't know what you mean by off animations, but the running animation is alot like that of sonic blast, as his feet don't start blurring until he hits full speed

They are just very stiff, especially before he starts his full speed animation.

turns out, it is water palace, no wonder why the boxlike buildings in the background were making me think its water palace over apotos

Awesome, but I'll bet that Modern Sonic will be getting most of the boss battles again, just like in the console version.

In other news: Sonic CD XBLA Preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XocqXz6UH4s#ws)

The U.S. track has been confirmed for the Sonic CD remake! Oh, thank God. You just don't know HOW much this pleases me. Up until now, I had almost given up hope, but seeing that has brightened my day for sure.

Don't get me wrong, though... The Japanese/European soundtrack isn't terrible by any means, but like I said before, I prefer the U.S. track, since that's the one I grew up with. To me, Sonic CD just wouldn't have been the same without it. I guess this remake won't be so disappointing after all.

EDIT: Ah, crap. Sega of America took the video down.

A list of achievements for the Sonic CD remake has been revealed. (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/sonic-cd/achievements/) It looks like I'll now have a reason to destroy the U.F.O.s and Metal Sonic projections by traveling into the Past at Quartz Quadrant through Metallic Madness. In the original, I never bothered to do so, since I'd normally have all seven Time Stones by the time the first Act of Quartz Quadrant is finished, and collecting all of those enables a Good Future in all Zones by default. Also, in case anyone didn't see the other video before it was taken down, then here's (http://www.4shared.com/video/C5cXpSr1/sonic_cd_xbla_preview.html) another link.

so since i play and own it, 3DS version is not bad for a 6 month rushjob

the only defect i've found so far in classic sonic's physics is that he stops cold when i jump at around midway through a loop from the top region to the region between the 75% and 100% mark within the loop. in most 2D sonic games, doing this gave you an extra burst of speed.

I haven't had the chance to play the 3DS version yet (due to the fact that I lack the system), but from what I've seen in some walkthrough videos on Youtube, I'm going to have to agree. Surprisingly, DIMPS actually got the physics right this time, and they're pretty spot-on. In fact, I daresay that they're slightly better than the console version's. Too bad that it's missing original level layouts for the Classic Genesis Era stages, though.

it's not clear if they planned it or not, but there's no super sonic in regular levels in the 3DS version neither...
yes, the 3DS version is just another victim of "sonic the rushhog syndrome" like loads of sonic games before it, and lack of super sonic in regular levels is a common trait of the rushhog syndrome games. remember SA1 and sonic '06?
