Itoi just posted some interesting things on Twitter today:

Perhaps the world IS going to end tomorrow. I'd have to wonder what this means. A compilation for the 3DS or WiiU? If so, it would give me even more reason to get one of those consoles.

(personally, i think the true sign of the times would be an announcement from NOA about this and/or MOTHER3 being localized, or earthbound on VC.)

Yeah, like I said. True sign of the times: NOA announcing localization of whatever Itoi's project may be. Hell would have frozen over.

let's not rule out worldwide, PAL territories got neither of the trilogy, the US was lucky to get EB to begin with

and lets not forget the upcoming SSB games for the 3DS and wiiU which with no doubt will have EB characters on the roster again and therefore fuel up the mother hypetrain

and with further research, it turns out monolith soft's unannounced wii U game isn't part of any established franchise, and that's most likely why the article was pulled

they're close enough to creatures inc to probably get the whole trilogy remade in a revised pokepark engine, but i'm fine with just retooled ROMs

...ok, maybe EBzero could at least use the metroid zero mission treatment, remake it using the graphical style and features of its successors, and have the original NES game as an unlockable...wishful thinking though, and there's like several fanprojects attempting this already...

...i still need to get a repro cartridge of EBzero, it'll look nice sticking out of my NES toploader aside the EB-loaded SNES

funny you mention that. new update on ebcentral: mother 2 on japanese virtual console march 20 (http://earthboundcentral.com/?post_type=post&p=10890). japan only, but it is probably a good sign of things to come.

this is apparently the "republication" that itoi was referring to.

No idea. It is best to remain cautiously optimistic. The fact it is going to be on Japan's VC is a big step forward, though.

our only sliver of hope is the fact that mother2 was picked over mother1 as the first of the trilogy to get a rerelease

only mother2 ever made it overseas

depending whether the re-released mother2 ends up being modified or not, and if so, it indicates that NCL is now willing to allow NOA make changes to the game and rerelease it in modified form to give the franchise some exposure

apperently NoA intends to at least give EB its own miiverse community in america with reggie at the reins

silly NoA, why can't they be honest and outright tell the fanbase that it's not coming through official channels?

Watching fangamer (http://www.twitch.tv/fangamer) play MOTHER2 on the Japanese WiiU. So far, as of the time of this post, nothing seems to have been altered.

the franchise's brightest day since the day mother3 arrived

they're still running as big a risk re-releasing it in japan in a seemingly untouched state as in anywhere else

the only glaring difference is that we have the dali's clock problem and they don't, but the untouched JP game has alot more ground for litigation including the ever forbidden red crosses...

And so, a much-anticipated re-release of Earthbound is finally coming to the Wii U Virtual Console this year (http://earthboundcentral.com/2013/04/earthbound-on-virtual-console-coming/). I personally couldn't care less, since I consider this game to be pretty overrated, but to those who were looking forward to it, congrats.

Ness has been a regular in the Super Smash Bros. series since the first game, so I don't think it's too much of a stretch for him to appear in the fourth one. Not including him at this point would be like leaving out Mario.
