Post by: Manda on Dec 28 2004, 06:02 PM
Product reviewed: HP PhotoSmart M407 Digital Camera
Price paid: $199.99

Pros: 4.2 Megapixels, Long battery life (about 8 hours)
Cons: Batteries take a long time to charge, No battery meter

Image Quality: *****
Ease of Use: ****
Battery Life: *****
Overall: ****2/3

The HP PhotoSmart M407 digital camera is one of the best digital cameras IMO, second only to the Canon Digital Elph. It features an auto-focus lens with 3X optical zoom and 4X digital zoom. It has a built-in NiMH battery that will last you 8 hours. The only problems I have with this camera are that the batteries take a long time to charge and that there is NO battery meter! There is only a "Low Battery" indicator icon that gives you a few more pictures once displayed. The batteries take about 12 hours to charge, and will only charge if you attach it to a FireWire port or an A/C adapter. This camera also has three modes of capture (4 MP, 2 MP, and VGA). It also includes a built-in flash that can also reduce red-eye and measures light level so it doesn't fire when you don't need it. It has 16 MB of built-in flash memory, but I recommend you purchase a memory card for it. It uses SanDisk S/D memory cards, which are available in 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1024MB sizes. All in all, I think this is a very good camera for people who are just starting digital photography.
