game hardware that broke in your ownership
« on: Jan 03 2014, 08:53 PM »
an original model NES, but i'm sure it mostly was the fault of its common flaws regarding the 10NES chip and the ZIF connector, i was rather young at the time. today i own its toploader counterpart

an n64 because dumbass brother decided it'd be cute to gouge out the jumper pak just to see what it looks like out of the system, with a ballpoint pen, the pen broke and ink got all over the port, rendering the system useless

my brother's DS lite, because my brother syndromed over something and broke the touch screen, was $50 to replace with a secondhand original model DS

a game gear, because the sound borked and that GGs have shitty capacitors, again another common flaw with those systems
my second GG is suffering from shitty capacitors too as i can't go partway into a game without it crashing

and if computers are to be included, about 4 PCs and some word processor that had tetris on it, since i only ever played games on those before internet became a thing in the household

- for peripherals, a ROB and a superscope succumbed to the carelessness common with young children
- my brother cut the wires off an NES advantage
- 2 dreamcast controllers crapped out on me, an official and a third-party
- a third-party SNES controller stopped functioning right, i know it had turbo on it
- a third-party N64 controller i borrowed from someone that didn't work right
- both of my earliest gamecube controllers
- a genesis megafire controller dosen't work right
- a faulty sonic 1 cartridge i bought secondhand
- a sonic 3 cartridge i bought secondhand that dosen't save
- a gamecube action replay disc broke, and it was the earlier version that let you put in your own codes, expensive as fuck to replace now
- 2 iterations of GBA action replay cartridges that got bricked, those I used to get to deoxys in FR/LG/E
- a GB/C cheat cartridge that refused to work
- my first action replay DS, bricked

My NES fried  when I was 5. Literally. I was playing Excite Bike when the screen went blank, and a small cloud of smoke came out of the NES. I have no idea what caused it. My SNES still works fine (though I've gone through quite a few controllers), play it often, and the same story for my Nintendo 64. My gamecube shattered when I dropped it (much to my surprise). Wii works fine (though I only use it for Smash Brothers at this point).

Had one Playstation 2 that abruptly stopped working, and replaced it with a new one that still works. Spent most of today on my PS3.

Xbox original sitting on my dresser, it works, but I don't actually have any games for it anymore (due to my family selling most of them when we upgraded to the 360, and my last game I let somebody borrow, and never saw it again...), and I had a 360 that refused to keep its disc tray closed (it would randomly open during gameplay).

As for handhelds... Actually, all of them still work, surprisingly.

Wish I could get my hands on a copy of Earthbound... For now, just settling with a ROM and emulator.

I don't remember having any gaming consoles break. At most, I think my Genesis controller got a frayed cable, and that's about it.

I've had a few PC's break in my time. My Commodore 64 stopped turning on one day, I think the power brick just died. I had a 386 that I broke with a modified COM file. My 486 lasted longer until I took it apart to do some stuff, I don't remember what. I've had a couple mainboards fry on me, accidentally ran batch files that had deltree -y c:\windows in them, deleted system files by accident curious about the KILL command in QBasic, and the pin in the DC jack in my old laptop got pulled out.

Wish I could get my hands on a copy of Earthbound... For now, just settling with a ROM and emulator.

EarthBound is available on the WiiU Virtual Console, if you have that.

Buy me a coffee!

dreams are as portals, flat visions of misty places, fragments bound below my surface.
but i can write dreams, they flow from me, inscribed yet now unbound. i touch them, and they are real....and they are real.

assuming you own a wii U, it's on the wii U eshop, even has a digital version of the player's guide

look up amazon prices and...i see that not even EB's introduction to the eshop wasn't to lower demand and prices for secondhand SNES cartridges even with their save batteries dying out...you can thank starmen.net for that

i payed about $80ish for my cartridge and that was not too long after starmen broke the bad news about legal issues that didn't exist

The PlayStation 2.

Hundreds of times.

(Ironically; MS Internet Explorer 11 auto-corrected "Playstation" to "PlayStation")

hmmm let me think

I remember in my yough time we had 2 NES and i think we got the NES10 chip problem on the one we threw away. Still playing on the second one
My NES control deck rubbers were literally destroyed after 20 years of gameplay (never had a SNES nor a N64) thanks to Nintendo Repair Hut they are like new now

I got a GameCube MK:DD edition (WOO a new console, the Wii got out 2 years later) and one of the 2 controller analog stick broke on the first day. My dad repaired it like 20 times with crazy glue.

I had a phat DS and I temporally exchanged it with my friend's PSP, he burrowed it to his lil bro and he droped it and the top screen cracked and had that black inky like thingy running more and more over the screen as the time goes

other than that I'm too caring to actually break my things

My pikachu edition 3DS shitty speakers make some unpleasant noises

Playstation 2 was my first console to break. Laser issues.

Three Xbox 360's. Two failed JTAG attempts and one case of melting something I shouldn't have with a heat gun. :)

Playstation 4. That scene in Jurassic Park, where Alan Grant touched the monitor, and the video flickered? My PS4 came with this same feature, except you didn't have to touch it.
