Title: earthbound not VC-bound
Post by: Yerix on Apr 06 2009, 04:28 PM
this was back from febuary and it was spread widely to other gaming news sites, but here's the original announcement:

surprised no one bothered to post it here

I was considering posting it, actually, as well as a thread about Mother3. It's rather disappointing that Earthbound isn't making it onto VC, but I can understand why. Though, if there weren't legal issues back in 1995, why would it be a problem today? o.O

internet, fans compiling the pop culture references on fansites, legal team being better than what was in '95...either one of any combination of those and maybe more...

i can't imagine both NoA and NCL just leaving the game buried though...

I know, it's such an awesome game.  The whole Mother series is pretty good, in fact.

...the japanese VC also currently has neither of the mother titles. wouldn't be surprised if the same issues are keeping those withheld over there.

these issues jeopardize the game's preservation, and I mean the preservation of legally obtainable forms of the game. pre-owned working cartridges are hard to obtain as-is with $50+ prices going on ebay, so people are pirating the ROM by the thousands. and don't get me started on dying save batteries and cartridges dying from age and misuse...

I swear, I must be one of the only people on this planet who doesn't like Earthbound. In my opinion, it's nothing more than an overrated, mediocre piece of garbage, and I'll never be able to understand why it gets all the hype that it gets. I played the game for about a month or two ago, played for probably a maximum of fifteen minutes, and just turned it off. Earthbound has some of the most crappy, mediocre, and boring gameplay I've ever seen in an RPG game. I'm not really a huge fan of RPGs anyway (aside from Super Mario RPG, the Paper Mario series, and a few others), but that's besides the point.

you forgot about playing earthbound and MOTHER 3 on emulators. some rom hackers released an english patch for MOTHER 3 a while ago.

I can easily play MOTHER3 on my DS. Flashcart ftw.

IN OUR DIMENSION, SEGA HAS CHRONOBOUND, AKA FATHER.

THEY HAVE THE 2 OLDER MASTER SYSTEM AND GENESIS INSTALLMENTS ON THE SEGA DREAMWEAVER VC ALREADY IN ALL REGIONS.

ALSO, THERE'S CHRONOBOUND 3 FOR THE GAMEGEAR+, AGAIN IN ALL REGIONS.

OBVIOUSLY NINTENDO WANTS YOUR MOTHER TO DIE.

ALSO, INSTEAD OF POKEMON AND FATHER BEING SEPARATE, THEY CROSSED OVER AT ONE POINT. IN THE CROSS OVER YOU DON'T NEED A POKEMON TO WALK INTO TALL GRASS. YOU CAN SMASH THEM WITH YOUR SUPER LEEK OF DOOM. ALSO, MEWTWO IS DEFEATED BY SINGING.

massive bump from a bygone decade, but it was necessary

and after about 3 years, an NOA employee again brings bad news

http://gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=180446 (http://gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=180446)

basically 3 main things out of the millions the fans found

"1.The Sky Runner song needs to be changed"
...just remix it to its counterpart from mother 3

"2.The Chuck Berry battle song needs to be changed"
aka "new age retro hippie theme", bloody animal crossing had KK slider compose a simular sounding song and got away with it 4 times with a possible 5th
either way it can't be that hard to change up at least just the intro a little?

"3.The Dali’s Clock enemy name needs to be changed"
i'd rename it "persistent memory"

NCL should just grow a pair and allow these changes to happen, because at this point, japan is just as unlikely to get the pure untouched mother2 on their VC as that of the US and the rest of the world

the US version already has a load of edits from its JP counterpart to begin with

Meh, all they basically did was tell people what they already knew. Like I said in my above post three years ago, I'm not an Earthbound fan in the least, but I can definitely sympathize. This here is nothing more than a blatant kick in the nuts, a giant middle finger to the fanbase.

back then they just said "legal issues with some game content" and nothing specific, so the fanbase pointed fingers at the hundereds of popcult refs they can find in the game. this time around we've been given the specific problems keeping the game from any sort of re-launch

and just to make sure, it wasn't an official NOA statement, just an anon employee relaying info, something that could be an NDA breach that could spell the end of one's employment

be it cases of cryptomnesia or "jimmy hart versions", sound-alike music is spread throughout videogame history

skyrunner theme just sounds simular because of the instruments and is not an exact copy, and if "rockin' KK" didn't raise any red flags with the big music people, then the "NARH battle theme" is just fine. the intro to both songs aren't a carbon copy

thus "dali's clock" is the only real issue, a name change is just a minute in PK hack, or whatever nintendo uses to fiddle with SNES source code. hell it wasn't even its name in the JP version (its うしなわれしきおく/lost memory)

so i'd say dali's clock is the only real offender and the songs are just fine, considering everything else hidden in EB's soundtrack. but i'd say about 2 out of 5 real lawyers would have different opinions on the songs...

ST: I would be remiss in not telling you that some of my writers would like to play another Advance Wars and they would someday like to play Mother 3 in America… [Note: Iwata writes something down] … Whenever I ask Reggie about Mother 3, he says, ‘ask Mr. Iwata.'"

Iwata: [in English]: "Just yesterday, before I left from Japan, I met with Mr. Itoi, who is the creator of the Earthbound series. [laughs]"

ST: "Oh, I know. Are we ever going to get it?"

Iwata: "And, yeah, accidentally we were discussing that there are huge fans from Western countries for the Mother series [laughs].

ST: "So, someday? Someday?" [I stand up to shake his hand]

dicktease, false hope and poppycock until something happens
