Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
« on: Mar 11 2012, 01:42 AM »
(Formerly known as "Donkey Kong 3DS?").

Supposedly, a new Donkey Kong game is coming to the 3DS, and game stores are already accepting pre-orders. If Retro Studios is the developer, then I'm keeping my expectations low this time around, considering what a disappointment Donkey Kong Country Returns turned out to be.

EDIT: This topic is now about Donkey Kong Country: Topical Freeze.

rumor also has it that its a remake of DK64
just replace the rare logos and jetpac with something else. i think there also was a photo of banjo in DK's house or something

wasn't fond of DKCR myself, too many mainstays left out in order to be "herp derp new & exciting"

If this truly is a remake of Donkey Kong 64, then here's hoping it actually has some new content, unlike the 3DS versions of Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time.

Back in 2010, we finally get a Donkey Kong Country game in over ten years, and three years later, we simply get a port of the exact same game, instead of a sequel? Pffft. Screw that. I see no legitimate reason to waste any money on a 3DS port, if I already have it on the Wii. It doesn't exactly help that the game was a disappointment, either.

Here's a comparison video between the Wii and 3DS versions:
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D vs. Wii (Head-to-Head Comparison Video)
As far as I'm concerned, there are only graphical (and control-related) differences, thus proving my point on just how redundant this port is.

the best part is no waggle, waggle turned me off from buying it

and there's the sideways wiimote controls, that control pad gets to your thumb after a while...i hated how pokepark2 kept the sideways wiimote controls of its predecessor, i sure enjoyed exploring 3D space with a control pad...my thumb cried, y u no nunchuk support creatures?

the inevitable pokepark3 probably coming out partway after X/Y is looking to be better now that the wii U gamepad has sticks...and even still they can troll it with control pad movement

Apparently, there is going to be some new content, after all. Until they specify exactly what this "new content" is going to be, I still want as little to do with it as possible.

New stages confirmed; eight of them, in fact.

Nintendo eShop: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
A few of the new stages show up about a minute and four seconds into the trailer.

I gotta say, this port may not be as half-assed as I originally thought.

Donkey Kong Country - Tropical Freeze Gameplay Walkthrough Trailer - E3 2013 - E3M13 Wii U

Personally, I think the real bad news is that they're giving Kremlings fans yet another blatant middle finger. You think they would have learned after the backlash they got for that in the first one. Oh, wait, I forgot... According to them, K. Rool and the Kremlings "[don't] HAVE to come back[.]".

Other than that, Tropical Freeze looks as if it's shaping up to be a solid game (no pun intended), seeing how they brought back Dixie, along with water levels. The latter most likely means we'll be seeing Enguarde again, as well.

David Wise, the guy who composed music for the SNES games, will be returning to work on this game's music. That's great news to me. The lack of Kremlings and whatnot aside, the soundtrack is another aspect of the first game that disappointed me. There were some good tunes here and there, but there just weren't enough of them that were truly memorable, you know?
