Title: Common Windows 3.1 problems
Post by: Manda on Apr 01 2005, 09:58 PM
This is a list of problems I've seen with Windows 3.1...

Frequent GPF's in a system with 128+ MB of RAM
a. This is a problem with the OS itself, not your computer. Back when Windows 3.1 was released, no computers had 128 MB of RAM. Besides, why not upgrade to 95 or even 98? Windows 9x supports 4 GB of RAM!
b. Reduce the amount of RAM in your system to 64 MB or less.

Cannot use TrueType fonts in anything besides Word 6.0
a. Only .FOT type TrueType fonts can be used in 3.1 natively
b. Use only bitmap fonts instead
c. Install Adobe Type Manager, which adds support for TrueType fonts with a .TTF extension

Can only start up in 286-Standard Mode
a. First of all, check your processor model. If it is a 286, then you can only run in Real Mode or 286 Standard Mode.
b. If you only have between 512 KB and 2 MB of RAM, this could be a reason
c. If none of these apply, reinstall DOS and Windows 3.1
