idSoftware has announced that production had begun on Doom 4. Taken from their news article:

Production has begun on DOOM 4â„¢, the next journey into the legendary DOOM universe. We are expanding our internal team and are currently hiring to work on this highly anticipated title.

"DOOM is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software.  "It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

The DOOM franchise is one of the most recognizable and important in gaming history, having been named "one of the ten most influential games of the decade" by PC Gamer and "the #1 game of all time" by GameSpy.  DOOM 4 will join the award-winning series which has consistently topped sales charts throughout the world.

FUCKIN STUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPID!

Well ID hasn't disappointed me yet (unless you count Q4 which was fairly blah) so I says bring on the carnage!  I still need to get my hands on Doom 3 actually.  I should do that at some point.  I guess I have a few years 'til this comes out though so I'll be good for a while.

Meh.

Doom 3 was too System Shock-esque for me. Not to say it wasn't good (it was actually quite awesome), but when I bought it, I was expecting what I got from the first two- a murder frenzy spanning many hours of play.

Still, I'm actually quite intrigued about this new game. I won't watch for updates as closely as I will with Descent 4 development (which has recently begun again, w00t!), but I'll still look into it from time to time.

PS- And no, it's not that I didn't like DOOM 3 just because I had to THINK, if one gathered that from my comment, it's just that (like a hollywood action flick) when I play a shooter, I just want to put my brain on standby, and blow everything that MOVES into little, itty-bitty red flying gooey things. Just to clear that up.
