Letting Things Go
by
Kuro Soma

Michael looked out the window onto the gloomy street; the rustle of the dead trees catching what wind they could and the sound of the car carrying your hopes of a visitor turning down the wrong lane echoed around the block.  The road he lived on was a dusty old road
that was built way back when for older cars, but no one used the old
one anymore.  But Michael was thinking of it and what his family had
done there for the past two years he was with them.  You see, Michael had been alone for a while now.  To be exact, he had wanted to be alone for a while now.  One can only guess that when a child is conflicted by matters such as these, all he can do is lock himself away somewhere until he forgets, or, more importantly, remembers something else.

The reason for all of this was because of who he was in the eyes of the public.  Now, you may say that there's no need to fret over such small ideals.  But think of when you were little, and just learning; those small ideals were teaching you how to be just, fair, and kind.  And if any man considers those morals small ideals that don't need further thought then that man should have his putrid, black heart removed, his cold, mechanical brain plucked out, his sharp, piercing eyes, shoveled out, have all of these thrown into a pot of boiling water, and then he himself thrown into the vile stew he's made.

Now, what he was remembering was all the other times he celebrated with his family; every other Christmas, Easter, Saint
Patrick's Day, everything religiously related.  He wondered how it
could be so wrong to live in a house full of people who love and care
the same as he did.  He wondered why he couldn't have happiness having been adopted by them.  He wondered why the people of his shrine spat at him when he walked by, or why everyone just stared at him with a cold dislike on both sides of the fence.  It was as if one God didn't want him, and the others wouldn't take him back.  And when you feel truly alone, all the eating and warm clothes in the world can keep you from feeling the harsh bite of Winter and the rending pain of an empty heart.

Now, it may seem extremely fortunate, but just when you feel this true lonesomeness, you find that there's always someone who won't let you stay hunched in sorrow, and them finding you is completely and utterly coincidential.  Most people would call this person "the jackass who wouldn't let me be," but for those who are truly in such writhing sadness, anyone is welcome.  It may seem, too, that it was extremely lucky that this person was his older sister, but that, too, is coincidental.  She said, "Michael?  Michael, please come down.  What are you doing up here?  You must be freezing..."  She was so concerned about this, as a matter of fact, that she had brought him a blanket.  Michael, seeing this and the fact that she went looking for him, felt as if the weight of thousands of people had been released from him, and he ran to her arms and cried.  He cried so much that when there were no tears left, he just sat in her arms and didn't want to move.  And when he did, he said "I dun care about what they say anymore...I dun care if everyone hates me...I just wanna stay here..."  The sister, feeling that the boy was worried, said, "And who ever said you couldn't?"

After this, the boy was led downstairs.  He told the family
what they had said.  After that, the family had their own personal
shrine built in the back.  They explained to the members at the old
shrine that those who feel that tolerance was an issue in any faith
should join them at their shrine.  At first, there were two.  Slowly,
the number grew to three, four, or five.  And, eventually, the number
was so large that they moved the personal shrine back to the site of
the old one.  But no one used the old one anymore.
Nyah.
