Ok this is a story I started a while ago, and ust started to pick up again. Essentially it's a book of rants, but at the same time it's a "story" as the introduction shortly explains. I view it more as a way for me to express my opinions on certain ascepts of scoiety, while remaining "annoynomous" in the literary world. Anyway, I would apreciate any critisism (Except grammar and such, I know my grammar sucks major ass, I would prefer actual input I have enough people to chastize me for my grammar ^^)
Nothing Of Importance
Introduction
Isn’t Life Funny? Heh, I can remember a time when I was full of hopes and dreams for the future. Now look at me, a 27-year-old loser who is sitting at a computer typing his last hope for making it big. About nine years ago I had my whole life in front of me. I was fairly popular in high school, and kept my grades up, I might have actually gone somewhere in life, but then I made a dumb decision, and no, it wasn’t drugs. I have always loved being able to think in theorize, so my first year at college (Go B.C.!) I decided to take a philosophy. That was it, I was hooked. I loved reading about the old philosophers, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes and Bacon, it enthralled me. And that was when I made the biggest mistake of my life, I majored in Philosophy. When you major in Philosophy the only real think you will have to think about are the philosophical interpretations of a patty and a spatula. I learned tons, but believe it or not, a penny for your thoughts doesn’t get you much in today’s world, so I am writing this, a little food for thought coming straight out of my head.
You may be wondering why I would choose such a strange title for a book. I mean who wants to read something that the author decides is “Nothing of Importanceâ€, right? Actually the title has twofold meaning. One is more “in-depth†than the other. In today’s society the opinion of a poor man really doesn’t mean didly-squat, so by many these thoughts may simply be cast off as “nothing of importanceâ€. The second reason is a bit more fun.
Friend: Hey what are you reading?
Reader: Nothing of Importance
Friend: Hey, I was just asking. If you don’t want to tell me, just say so!
Kinda cheesy, I know, but I thought it was funny, and it’s my book so there!
I hope you truly enjoy the experience, and if you don’t I hope that you can at least feel good about the fact that your $11.95 or so went to a good cause, me. Now, without further ado (well, not counting this) I give you, Nothing of Importance.
The Gender War
I find it so sad that the human race, in all its “greatness†can still put so much importance into what GENDER you are. I am sure most of you have heard of the Political Spectrum before, and if you haven’t then I hate to inform ya buddy, but this won’t be a very fun book for you, so just close the book, and walk away. Anyway, I have devised a little spectrum for Gender Bias. Let’s assume the Left represents “Male Supremacy†and the right represents “Female Supremacyâ€, shall we?
On the far left we have the extreme “Male Supremacistsâ€, or as I prefer to call them, Sexist Bastards. These are the people (as, sadly, it isn’t strictly men) who think Women need to be repressed, and they need to know their place, you know all that bullshit. Next we have the mildly sexist (against Women) people. They don’t think women should be REPRESSED, but they don’t think they should have full rights either. Then we come to the middle, Feminists. Now I know some of you guys are saying “I’m not a sexist, but I am not a Feminist either! Only Women are Feminists!†Let me ask you this, do you believe Women should be treated equally to Men in society “Yeah but…†*Smack* you’re a feminist then dumbass. Further along our trip to the right we have those who are mildly sexist towards Men. These are the individuals (again, some of both gender) who believe that Women are slightly better than Men, and think that Men should lose some rights, leaning society slightly towards the Women’s side. Now we have reached the end of our journey with the “Female Supremacistsâ€, or “Neo-Amazons†as I call them. These are the people who think men should be locked up and used strictly as breeding stock, until a better option comes around. These people scare the living shit out of me, needless to say.
Now I am sure you think it is just great that I have them all categorized, big freakin whoop-de-do, but now let me explain about the extremes in gender supremacy. I think I will start with the Female Supremacists, simply because they are a bit newer. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the feminist movement, but these guys (oh, excuse me, “peopleâ€) take it too far. They are the creepy icky side of Feminism that has the whole “Female World Domination†thingy going for them. Not good.
Next we have the Feminists (Ok I don’t think the in betweens really need a separate explanation, you can figure it out.) This is what the average Joe Schmoe is. You can see how men are better at some thing, and how women are better at other things, but in general nothing is really limited by gender (Except maybe giving birth… at the moment. Damn science.) And there is no reason to limit society to gender roles. Go you!
Finally, we have the Sexist Bastards! You guys suck just as much as the Neo-Amazonians! You think that this is a Man’s World and that Women should be seen and not heard. I got two words for you and they aren’t Merry Christmas. These people tend to be a bit worse than the Neo’s, just because the Neo’s are generally reacting to these guys, in what they see as Justice. History is filled with these morons, and they still thrive in today’s societies.
Ok, so now I know what you’re thinking, “Why the hell did you just waste minutes of my life by making me read that?†Because, I can, this is a book for ranting. Now onto the more important part of the gender war now that you know the participants. Oddly enough this war is most often fought by the Feminists, or the mildly sexist, but rarely by the two extremes. I am sure you have all heard kids arguing over which gender is better. Goes something like this:
â€Girls are better!â€
â€Nuh-uh! You doo-doo head! BOYS are betterâ€
â€No! Boys have cooties!â€
â€Yeah, well you girls are all stupid ca-ca faces!â€
Ever since we are young we seem to argue over something as simply as gender. We are trying to argue that an extra leg on the sex chromosome (or a lack of one) can make us better. That’s some bullshit right there. It is arguable that Men and Women are suited naturally for certain tasks, but that doesn’t mean a Girl can’t kick a guys ass in arm wrestling and a single father can’t raise children. The gender war pisses me off to no end. Who really gives two shits what gender you are, it won’t help you if you have no skills. People wonder why society has so many problems with such a simple random “gene drawâ€, but this war sure as hell isn’t helping.
What Are We?
Ok, so we’re moving right on to the next bit (Hope I’m not going too fast for you.) This next bit is an essay I wrote for my AP European History Class in response to Schindler’s List (One of the best movies of all time. Brilliant directing by Spielberg). I know what your thinking, “History Class? I thought you were 27?!?!†I am… I just save everything. I still have those crap papers they have you write in 1st-5th too if you want to see them… I didn’t think so, so moving right along!
What are we? Throughout history this question has been asked. Following a particularly horrific scene of “Schindler’s List†my friend Emma Bogan turned to me and asked that very question. During the Holocaust prisoners were treated as numbers and statistics by the Nazis, they were just seen as names. Is that all we really are? No. Human beings are filled with thoughts, feelings, aspirations, wants and needs. All this can’t be summed up in a number or name.
Look up at the night sky and you can (usually) see stars, billions spread across the cosmos. From a distance they all seem generally the same to us, little specs of light, but if you were to look at one closely you could see what makes the star unique, special, and see it’s true beauty. The same applies to people. When you are walking in a hall, or down the street you usually pay little mind to those around you. At first glance you can’t tell anything about them, especially in this day and age when appearances are often deceiving. With this in mind it is easy to understand how some people can overlook the uniqueness that every individual has.
Some might view people as they do the stars, from a distance. “So what if a few die, there are billions more.†People who think this way don’t consider that when a person dies, it is like an entire universe blinking out of existence. Everything that made that person up, their personality, their dreams, their thoughts, their needs and desires instantly vanish, leaving those who knew them devastated.
Anyone who has ever lost a loved one can tell you people are more than just a number or a name. You can’t kill a name or a number, they can’t die, but people can. To know the pain of losing a loved one is to know the value that every individual has, to know that there is more to us, each and everyone one of us, which can never be put into words.
Throughout the course of human history we have wondered what we truly are, from the Ancient Greeks to the Philosophers of the modern age. Though the answer can’t be put into words if you look deep enough inside of yourself you can find the answer to the eternal question, “What are we?â€
So, that’s about it. I hope it gives you something to think about. If not, then I hope I didn’t scare you off with the big words.
