"You DO realize that suicide equals instant hell for him, don't you?"
"Yes. He has no hope of coming back--it's just me and you now."
"And Amber--we can't forget her, either."
"Of course not. There should be happy times now that Lucifer is dead."
The couple walked away from the crowd, from the commotion. Police officers and paramedics were crawling all about the scene of Tyler's suicide. They were investigating--for what, Jenn didn't know. What is there to investigate--he killed himself, it ain't gonna get any simplier than that, she figured.
"I still don't understand why we were reincarnated." Ryan wondered.
"I dunno." Jenn said, shrugging her shoulders. "Lucky, I guess."
"No," Ryan said. He stopped abruptly. "It happened for a reason."
"Whatever floats your boat!" Jenn dismissed his arguement. She really couldn't be bothered worrying about petty things as why they were living again--they'd all died painful deaths. Jenn had been murdered by her father, Ryan was trampled over by possessed demon-humans, Amber had mysteriously died sometime in Jenn and Tyler's early teenage years. Jenn reflected the scene in her mind, like a tape was rewinding itself to the memory.
"I'm ho-ome!" she yelled as she closed the front door behind her.
"Yeah, we is back!" Tyler yelled jokingly. They were returning home from school, both of them thirteen years old.
"Sorry kids, but your mother's--dead." Lucifer said, pretend sorrow in his voice.
"What?!" Jenn blurted out.
"Liar!" Tyler spat out at Lucifer.
"Not at all--you can see her body if you wish..."
"Ew, yuck!" Jenn crinkled her face. "Are you some kind of schizoid?!" she said before she could stop herself.
Lucifer just walked away from them. Left by themselves in the living room, Jenn sat down on the couch numbly. She didn't shed tears for her deceased mother. Tyler didn't cry, either, but he was very upset.
"Hey--here's a chance for me to use one of our new vocabulary words: stolid! 'My sister has a very stolid personality, and when our mother died--"
"Shut it." she said coldly. Then Jenn walked upstairs to her room, where she flounced onto her bed and lay there, the thought of never seeing her mother again tossing and turning in her head.
"Yo--are you with me?" Ryan asked Jenn as he shook her gently to snap her out of her reverie.
"Huh? Sorry, I was just thinking of when Mom died--I was thirteen."
"S'okay. But where is she, anyways?" Ryan questioned Jenn.
"How should I know? She could be anywhere, really..."
Then she spotted her mother at the end of the street corner. Jenn and Ryan ran to meet her before she might walk away; she hadn't noticed them.
"Hey Mom!" Jenn yelled.
The two hugged, and Jenn felt like she was going to suffocate. At last, mother and daughter tore themselves apart.
"Hey, know why we're alive again?" she asked.
"Sort of. I haven't gotten the whole story, but somehow we're the ones chosen to save somebody." Amber answered.
"I wonder who, though..." Ryan's voice drifted off.
